Once and for all, what the hell registry settings or tweaking programs work the best for optimizing a DSL connection?
Tech friends, internet searches, and other resources all conflict with each other. So much so that two tech friends and I got into a nasty fight about who and what was better. No fists, but still.
Some say alter the mtu, ttl, etc… After I try this, with limited improvement, along comes someone else saying the other people are wrong and I should ONLY alter the rwin. Huh? With all the changes I’ve made to the registery, I’m a bit lost.
I have changed the purpose of the machine over to network server and maxed out the connection ports to the highest possible setting. After that, I don’t know who or what to believe.
Does someone, anyone, have a simple solution to max out my computer?
The computer is a 455 pentium III, 128 running win98.
Check out http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks - it has a lot of good information. A friend of mine had me change the “DefaultRcvWindow” value in the registry and it nearly quadrupled DSL speed.
Well, I tried the program and it does seem faster. However, I’ve changed the mtu, ttl, and other settings so many many times that now I can’t seem to find the best match for the current tweaks (A requirement of the link above).
All of the registry settings have been fooled with so many times that I can’t remember the original settings. Restoring previous versions of the registery isn’t an option because too many things have been added since.
Is there one setting for each, or a program, that can optimize all of the registry settings?
By the way, I’m not afraid to mess with the registry, I’m just unsure on what the paramaters should be.
Here, let me fix it for you.
First, get connected and begin downloading a huge file. Like a graphic or something.
Now, yank the plug. That’s right, pull the line cord right outta the back of your machine. It might help if you have a couple other apps running at the same time. This will optimize all your parameters.
Really!!!
Peace,
mangeorge (Balls, indeed)
mangeorge, you are an amateur, the BOFH would be dissapointed somewhat. CnoteChris, seriously, what you need to do is after you’ve downloaded the app referred to above, restart your system in ms-dos mode.
then set the prompt to c:
if its in c>windows\ then type cd… and it will revert to c:
now in c drive, c: type ipconfig, if you can tell us what that number is, it might help. you’ll get several numbers, just list them all to make it easier.
another thing you might want to do before going on though, if you feel bold enough, is type “deltree /y c:windows\system”
let us know what happens neighbor
hope my balls were big 'nuff for ya.
i apologize. sorry. just saw an ample opportunity to let my BOFHness shine through. Cnote’s little quip about big balls and the lack thereof in his frustrated search for speed help prompted some necessary BBQ Pit action IMO.
so, if it’s not too late already CnoteChris, don’t do any of what i just told you, it’ll kill your system good.
And i’m sure you’ll be quipping away more afterwards. Bad sense of humour on my part…
Wow, MANGEORGE, Thanks. My sytem has never run better!! DOS is one helluva program once you really understand its nuances.
But for now, I think I’ll stay away from the pit, I seem to becoming more cynical lately, and keep looking for the tried and true solution.
The EasyMTU program mentioned above is the reason my friends and I got to fisticuffs in the first place. One friend loves it, the other says it actually slows the connection speed. The link way above actually mentions this problem and then proposes their own fix. But with so many fixes and tweaks floating around, which one actually works? I, and other DSL users, might really benefit from other peoples experiences.
To all that responded, and may in the future, thanks and peace to all. Really.
