Internet acceleration software

I’m a bit hesitant to bring this up again. I asked this many moons ago and it received pratically no response.

Since I think others are interested in the same issue as myself, and since I just flushed out a number of suspect and non-performing software, I’ll present the question again.

What is the best software for ‘tweaking’ a high-speed, DSL or cable, internet connection?

Or better yet, what settings are the best to change?

I’m not afraid of rummaging around the regedit file or digging through the muck to get the best results from my machine.

However, this is getting truly aggravating for me because of all the contradictory information I’ve run accross. I want the end all, be all, software or settings that will maximize my connection.
FWIW: Pent. III 450 W/128 meg RAM running Win98.

Again, I know this has been brought up before, but I suspect and hope there are newer and better solutions to the ones presented before.

Thanks–

Try the Cable Modem/DSL Tuning Guide:

Wow, and an oops.

Wow-- Now that looks like what I’ve been after. Something that doesn’t pull any punches and says it like it is. Huuyaaa.

Ooops-- I think that was linked months ago in my old thread. I didn’t quite understand it then but I do now.

Thanks Chas E.

Try http://www.speedguide.net

And another:

http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks

I like the dslreports site in general.

Be careful with the DSL tweaks on here, especially that little utility that they say to download and run that modifes your Windows Registry. It screwed up my PC so Downloads were quite a bit faster, but uploads are so bad that Napster will not even work in upload mode, nor will IDrive or anything else. And it’s just not my connection, because the other 3 machines on my home network work just fine.

Thanks for the warning Anthracite.

I’ve found that the site that Chas E sited seems to work the best so far.

The other sites have actually slowed my system down.

However, that’s not saying they wouldn’t work better on different systems out there.

So, thanks.
*Note to those who will wonder about sentence #2- Yes, I did restore the registry to its default settings each time I tried and installed the new keys.

yea, go w/ Chas E’s site, I have use the one recomended tweek and now almost always download at the max rate - which they tell you how to calculate it.
Also I have used netsonic with dial up, it might also work w/ dsl. it basically pre-caches all links on a page as you are reading it so when you click on it it loads from the HD or mem not from the internet. this I don’t need with dsl because:
1: the links come up fast enought
2: I am shareing the dsl w/ 2 other computers and don’t want to tie up the bandwidth w/ links I will never click on
3: the extra loading of links, I assume will cut into my download bandwidth - if I am downloading.
but it the above 3 don’t apply and you want to surf faster - see if it works
