We tried the Minnesota State Fair the first year we were here, but it was just too crowded. I don’t need to do that again! I never went to the NY State Fair when I lived there. Too far away and no interest.
I had a nice, relaxing weekend, which lasted for 5 minutes after I got to work, and now I’m all stressed again.
I’ve only been to fairs in two states, neither one of them my own.
The Wisconsin fair is pretty nice - clean, good food, drinks.
Iowa’s is an experience you have to see to believe. Giant butter sculptures, everything in the world is fried, the beer selection sucks. I once said that at the Iowa state fair, all you see are big tobacco spitting farmers with mustaches, tattoos and tank tops under their bibs so you can see their pit hair… and they all bring their husbands.
The Georgia National Fair is in October and I have no idea why it’s called “national”. I haven’t been in several years even though it’s a less than two hour drive from da cave. I used to love the county fair in ye olde hometowne. Honestly I don’t even know if there is still a county fair. I should investigate. Or not.
I made some tuna sallit this mornin’. It shall be dindin tonight cause it’s hawt and I don’t wanna cook. Plus tonight is Vestry meetin’ at the church house so I gotta go deal with that. Hopefully it will be short and sweet.
Rebo appropriate/inappropriate appendages crossed re Dipsey.
Welcome PJ!
Belz LTNS! I think of you everytime I make “Knock You Nekkid” margaritas.
When I lived in Maryland I would go to that state fair pretty regulary, but I haven’t been to one since I moved to Virginia in '98. This thread got me wondering if Virginia has a state fair, and lo and behold! It’s held a good 100 miles south of me, so I’ll probably never go to it, but now I’m thinking about seeing if any of my Maryland-based friends might be up for going to that fair this year.
My micro-gig on Friday night went well! I don’t know if I’ll sing with those friends again (their approach to gigs is just a little too casual for my anal-retentive nature), but I’m starting to think about hiring their band for myself sometime – if I can get a press kit together and if the restaurant agrees to let me perform there, that is. I don’t think getting the ok to perform will be much of a problem, I just have to get my act together (figuratively and literally!).
I posted a bunch of stuff on Craigslist last week, and Saturday afternoon I met someone at the Starbucks near my house and sold my Windows 7 upgrade DVD to them. Then this morning (about 40 minutes ago) I met someone at the Starbucks near my office and sold my white noise machine to them. I’m bummed that there have been no takers for my laptop, but I know that old(-ish) technology can be hard to sell. I just posted a DVD burner last night and am hoping to get some bites on that this week, but it’ll probably be the same as the laptop: no one needs external DVD burners anymore. When the laptop ad expires I’ll try reposting it with a lower price. I still need to post the biggest-ticket item, a pair of diamond stud earrings, but I’ve already tried Craigslist for them and the only responses I got were scams. I plan to post them on eBay Classifieds, but I want to take a better picture of the earrings first and I keep forgetting to do that.
After the Starbucks meeting on Saturday I went to the grocery store, then to the dog park for a while. Bailey chased/played with a very hyper poodle for a while, which was great because then she was lazy dog all night. I was lazy human all night, too, and was also lazy human all of yesterday. I did a lot of reading, which was great, and watched a lot of Netflix instant streaming: a documentary called The Heart is a Drum Machine, a few episodes of News Radio’s second season, most of The IT Crowd’s third season, and a bunch of episodes of 21 Jump Street’s second season (I’d forgotten about my huge crush on Peter DeLuise!).
Well, make up your mind already ------- is it the first or the sixth?
(ignore me ----- I’m just confusing the new poster. It’s my way of saying howdy!!! And welcome to the Monday Madness that lasts all week.) GT - PA always does an awesome butter sculpture for the farm show every winter. Fantastic to see and its turned into biodeisel after the show is over.
If you can follow the thread you will have most of us beat.
And somewhere I have a video of a young person who likes turtles. YouTube classic.
Think of it as the Mumper version of Thunderdome ----- two livers may enter, one may leave. :smack:
Morning! I missed the state fair, the Mid State fair and the county fair this year. I also skipped the Garlic Festival and the Rodeo. (That’s ro DAY o, never, ever rodeeo.) I don’t mind food onna stick, but heat and crowds aren’t my thing at all.
Tisiphone has informed me she requires two litter boxes, please, so now there’s one in the living room. Have I mentioned she’s a woolsucker, too? At least she won’t be giving me any hickeys!
No word on my grandmother. She’s been in the hospital for 3 weeks already and it seems doubtful she’ll ever come home. She had surgery for pancreatic cancer, which went well, but there have been lots of complications.
Swampy, I’m not sure about the county fair, but I know our old home town does have a Humming Bird Festival each year. I’ll probably head down there again this year to see old friends. Funnel cake is always good, as well as lots of other good eats. Plus, they do a charity football game between some of the former high school players and local business folk. I didn’t see the last one, but I’ve been told that it is rather entertaining.
Janie, I also like turtles. The chocolate and caramel go so well together. Oh, did you mean another kind of turtle? That kind are cute, but I wouldn’t try to take a bite of one…it would probably bite me back.
I haven’t been to the Western Washington State Fair for many years now. It’s too expensive and too crowded. I kind of miss some the craft and exhibits, but for the most part, it’s the same old thing year after year, only more expensive.
Seeing as I only live three or four miles up the hill from the Fairgrounds, I always just want it to go away because traffic is always fubarred during fair time.
I used to love the piroskies they had there, though. Those were good. I can’t do swirly rides, or I’ll puke.
It’s been so long since I’ve been to a state fair, I can’t remember when it was! LOL I don’t know whether to be happy or sad about that either, btw. I think the last one was the Delaware state fair, when I was in HS. And speaking of which, this past Saturday night was the 40th reunion of my graduating HS class! I was unable to make it as I got a migraine headache just a day before, much to my chagrin–I’d never had one before but apparently all I could do was lay down and rest in a darkened room until I started feeling better. Fortunately, some folks love to take pics, and took plenty. Now if only I knew who everyone was!!! LOL Actually, most folks look pretty good for being nearly 60 … I guess I can include myself in that bunch. And I’m feeling a bit more spry today than I had been feeling, let me tell ya.
The Delaware State Fair in the late 60s had the regular 4-H type stuff, and canned foods and quilts up for prizes … no cows of butter, though! That may be a midwestern thing? I don’t seem to recall deep-fried food on a stick either! Just as well, cause now I can’t eat it.
Happy Monday y’all. And appendages crossed for you especially, Rebo
A turtle’s voice is actually very loud but it’s at such a high frequency that the human ear can’t hear it. However, if you set a champagne flute in front of a turtle and then pinch it on the tail, the glass will shatter.
OK, so I was curious about the Duct Tape Float - I seriously thought it was a cup made out of duct tape and filled with root beer and ice cream.
Nope.
Here is a picture.
Somehow, I think the first person to make a duct tape float was probably named Earl, and after the case of beer was coming to an end, his buddy, Bubba said, “I bet ya can’t…” and thus it all began.
