So most of my story is going to be in the next post and the pictures are probably going to be even later, but:
After figuring out last week that the State Fair was ending on Sunday, I resigned myself to not attending this year. Then Far Away Best Friend arrived and informed me that her brother’s suggestion for entertainment on Friday was: going to the Ohio State Fair. Yay!
I hadn’t been there in over 15 years, so I was overdue for a visit. We only spent a couple of hours there (and we missed the butter cow!), but we did take a good walk through the building where a lot of the traditional home-ec competition displays were (quilts, cake decorating, jams, pickles, duct-tape floats). Yeah, I went  at the latter. And we saw the sheep and then the spinning and weaving demo (very cool).
As for food on a stick? Yeah there was lots of it. We went for the giant turkey legs (food on a built-in stick?) and roasted corn, though.
To tide everyone over, our local paper has kindly provided a whole page of links to coverage, blogs, reader photos, and, among other fair-related links, a butter-cow gallery (I don’t think any of these are this year’s cow, though).
So why did nobody tell me about State Fairs when I was living Over There, eh?
[whine]At the moment, my back is filing for divorce (does that about once a month) and by doze iz cdogged… well, that’s if you count “from the diafragm to the top of the head, including both ears and the eyeballs” as being “the nose”. I’ve asked the company doc and she says it’s either take an antihistaminic (I did, may as well have had candy) or up the ante to steroids, I guess I’ll just enjoy my current job’s ability to spend one whole day looking into the computer without actually seeing it.[/whine]
eta - we have a friendly competition going every week, who is first to reply to the OP, who’s first at the top of each page (based on the forum default of posts per) etc etc. We also encourage hijacking here.
Haven’t been to Michigan’s state fair in probably 25 years. The one time I did, I was disappointed. I’ve seen better county fairs here. The state fairgrounds are in the middle of the 'burbs north of Detroit. Probably nobody wants to take their prize cow there and risk getting cowjacked, I guess. We did go to the Wisconsin State Fair, once, and had a nice day. I’d go there again.
But I am going to the Jackson County fair on Wednesday night. We gots tickets to see Styx, and I’m geeked! (Yeah, I grew up in the 70’s - does it show?)
One of my bucket-list ambitions is to go to the Texas State Fair. From what I’ve seen, there is so many kinds of deep-fried-food-onna-stick stuff there that I just have to go try some. Missus Coder is with me on this, too. So some day, we’re gonna mosey on down there. At least it takes place in the fall - Sept. 24 - October 17 this year - so we can maybe just swelter then, instead of melting faster than our deep-fried-butter-onna-stick.
Eleventh! That’s 2 ones. I haven’t been to a state fair since the 1970s and haven’t been to a county fair since the 1980s. Cuz none of my friends want to go and eat corn dogs and go on swirly rides.
It’s raining and 87 today. Tomorrow’s forecast is rain and 87. Wednesday is rain and hotter. Anyone see a pattern???
I’ve lost count but I’m behind the 2 fifths idea! This is the second day in a row that I haven’t had an adult beverage of some kind. There will be withdrawal symptoms if I’m not careful!
Welcome, n00bz…there are no rules here, apart from the one that says we talk about anything and everything, and nothing has to be related to anything else. Chocolate offerings go to FCM, and beer offerings go to Swampy, Doggio and VBob.
I’ve never been to a state fair, or a county fair but that’s most likely because I’m in a whole different country. We do have a city show but it’s not the kind of thing I like to talk about. I feel dirty and used, just thinking about it.
Fab weekend has been had, I went to visit my doting parent yesterday and did all the jobs on her list so we are both happy with that. By the time I got home, 'im indoors had left so I have peace and quiet until Friday. Bliss!
Good morning all. I don’t know what number I am. I get so confused these days.
I haven’t been to the (1/2) state fair in years. (Washington has an Eastern and Western fair, since the two halves of the state hate each other.)
I get my last big needle injection (Synvisc) in my knee today. It seems to be helping some. I don’t look forward to the 3 1/2" needle though.
Hubby has his treadmill on Wednesday. He has more symptoms now, not related to his heart, so I don’t know what they’re going to find. I’m scared to think about it.
On the up side he’s been smoke free for 21 days. Yea hubby.
I’ve never been to a state fair but we used to go to the county fair every year (my kids were in 4-H). That fair got huge and I got to where I dreaded it - not much of a country feel to it anymore and the crowds were horrendous.
We moved up here (much smaller county population-wise) and my youngest and I went to the fair two years ago. Much, much smaller with way fewer people than what we were used to which was nice. The worst thing about it was we went on, like, the hottest day of the year, which made it pretty uncomfortable.
My kid and I will probably go this year (next week).
(picunurse - I am in Washington, too, and I’ve never been to either fair. I’m on the "west side. " :D)
Super busy here at work. I’m taking a breather right now.
For those of you who didn’t read the end of the last MMP - just cross your fingers that we get Dipsey home safe and sound and I don’t get into too much trouble.
State Fairs - I’ve never been to the Texas State Fair, but I’ve been to many a Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. It’s a fair, it’s a concert, it’s a livestock show! It’s huge and lots of fun. 'Cept the beer costs $7 each.
