Dumb and Dumber To

Open spoilers? Can you spoil a movie this dumb?

Anyway, has anyone seen it? I saw the original movie one time in the theater and have never seen it since. Having said that, I rather enjoyed it and have fond memories of seeing it with my Dad.

How is the new one? Good? What works and what doesn’t?

I have not yet seen it, but will on DVD.

The reviews have not been kind.

The general consensus I’ve seen is that it’s the same movie as the first one, but now Harry and Lloyd come across as pervy old men instead of lovable doofuses.

They waited too long.

The prequel, Dumb and Dumberer, may have soured some people on the movie, too, even though there was no involvement from anyone from the first movie.

If you liked the first one, you will like this one.

I saw it tonight. I laughed a lot, and the people in the theater were too and seemed to be having a good time.

The situation with the critics seems to be a bit ironic. In 1994, the movie was derided for being truly dumb, which of course it was. A lot of critics either didn’t like the humor or got whooshed. Today, however, the movie is considered a bit of a minor classic. Yet the critics seem to be reacting the same way as they did in 1994 even while recognizing that the original film was pretty good.

The movie very accurately recreates the spirit, mood, humor, etc., of the 1994 original. It is not quite as good, since the humor of the original was unexpected and, well, original for its time. Even with the inherent disadvantage of not being able to surprise audiences in the same way, I think the new movie does pretty darn good.

I saw the original last year again, and I found it to hold up pretty well but still be not quite as funny as it seemed back in 1994. So I am not over-romanticizing it in assessing the new one. I think they did nearly about as good a job as they possibly could have.
