How’s that for a bunch of acronyms?
With the advent of the latest edition of Dungeons & Dragons, I’m considering running a forum-based game using the 5th edition ruleset.
Since 5e is something of a throwback, I kind of want to play with classic D&D tropes. Dungeons, monsters, kobolds, etc. If the game happens, we can talk more about that at a later time.
I’m looking at recruiting 3-5 players, with newbies being welcome. The Basic Rules (a much stripped down version of the player’s handbook) are available for free online and would probably suffice - I’d be willing to help players through creation with the more extended options available in the the PH, which will be arriving via flying monkey sometime this evening.
For the uninitiated, play-by-post roleplaying operates (by necessity) differently than tabletop playing. There’s a lot more time for interesting narrative exposition, which is its main benefit. On the other hand, combat is a bit clunkier and can take a long time without a certain amount of handwaving. I have some tricks and methods that I think will mitigate that considerably, though.
I’d only ask two things of players:
-
Be willing to post about three times a week. I would keep to a set schedule (probably Sunday/Tuesday/Thursday) of posts, and players would be expected to post one response or more to each of mine.
-
Be willing to post descriptively. Not a novel each time, but since the main benefit of play-by-post is the extended narration, it’s great if everyone takes advantage of it.
I keep missing opportunities to get in on one of these. I’d be happy to participate.
I haven’t played D&D since 3.5 (and basically stuck with Pathfinder ever since then. Standard kobolds as CR3 badasses? Puh-leaaaaze.). Is there an online source for the version 5 rules? I’d love to play, but I’d need something of a rules update…
Everything you need to know to be able to play (with a limited class/race list and some other options missing as well) is at that link.
I’m starting up a 5th edition campaign for my kids right now, but I’d love a chance to participate as a player. Please count me in.
Yeah, I’ve got the 5e handbook and I’d be interested in playing. I’m also around the board all the damn time, so participation shouldn’t be a problem.
Lordy, that was quick. I will make an official setup thread early this evening.
How many players are you looking to host?
You’re the fifth, which is the most I wanted.
Ah, cool. So if I understand you correctly, we’ll have 3 times a week where we post a flurry of posts to move the game, right? Will we be posting at-will other times during the week to keep the game creeping along?
Will we have two threads? One for meta discussion and one for actual moves?
I guess I should probably let you go ahead and make the rule threads.
Sorry if I was vague. I will post three times a week. Between those posts, y’all will post as much as you like responding, talking to each other, resolving whatever I introduce, etc. I think that you generally won’t need to post more often than thrice a week, but you might choose to do more than that, especially if PCs are conversing with one another.
I’m off to post the setup/ooc thread. The game thread will be posted once everyone has their characters finalized.
Well, let me know if someone drops out.
Will do! You’re first in line.
