I’m getting my hair done Friday, am going for a new color for the summer: medium auburn, with strawberry-blonde highlights. Kinda Susan Sarandon-y, only without the self-important pontificating. “Boredom” is always the best reason to screw around with one’s hair.
Any Dopers who’ve met me in person have any input? The gals at the office say, “Ooooh, that’ll look really great!” but they’d say that if I told them I was going to get a pink d.a. with Elvis sideburns.
I have naturally auburn hair. I got highlights a couple of weeks ago and I love them. Thumbs up from me, even though I’ve only seen a picture of you and not the in-the-flesh-you.
I haven’t met you, but “auburn with strawberry-blonde highlights” sounds good, in a good way (that is, not in a goodie-goodie way). Is your hair long or short? Auburn. I like. **Auburn ** Classy but not brassy.
Myself, I’m thinking of a platinum gray with a swath of periwinkle hidden underneath. I want to do this. I like the idea of periwinkle ribboning through a french bun. Possibly getting fired is also a good reason to screw with the hair.
My hair now is short, dark-brown—the color is a bit severe, at my age. Joan Crawford said “women over forty should never have dark hair, it’s too aging next to the face.”
I don’t have white, or gray, or even silver popping up – I have natural highlights! (And since my unlighted hair is dark brown, the contrast is quite dramatic.)
[And, oops, so much for my hipness quotient on the John Waters thing, hunh, Eve?)
I haven’t met you, but I’ve seen photos. I think an auburn would look lovely. I have medium brownish hair with multi-colored highlights, which is why I get my hair dyed to auburn brown - it smooths out the muddle of color and looks nice. My colorist told me that I might want to consider some brighter highlights for the warmer weather, so it sounds like that might well work for you.
Hmmm, I’ll probably have to have him lighten my brows a bit too, to avoid that Lizbeth Scott look.
I’m having it done Friday after work (I’m not dumb enough to be a Suicide Redhead!). So if you don’t hear from me after that, you’ll know I suffered a Hair Disaster.
I think highlighted auburn will look great. I’m going a week from Saturday to get mine done. I’m doing my natural med-to-light blonde with warm blonde highlights. I also need a cut, but I’m unsure as to my direction in that department. I’ll probably do what I’ve been doing for the past few years, because I’m a hair-cut wimp. And it grows very slowly.
Just remember, your eyebrows should be a bit different shade from your hair. (My fashionista friend Emily contributed that little tid-bit.)
I’m probably the last person who should advise on haircare, as my hair currently looks like someone tried to perm a straw broom. I hope you like it, though!
Darnit, now I want to color my hair again. I wonder if the funky red hair dye I like is in stock right now…
Laugh if you will Eve, but I’ve had my hair done like #3 from the top on the left a number of times. It was so big, I was actually receiving a radio transmission.
Personally, I think auburn with highlights is a great choice for spring/summer. Highlights around the face seem to brighten the whole complexion.
