I’ve been dying my hair auburn for the past twenty years or so. It’s original color (and the color of my roots when it’s time for a dye job) is blonde, but it’s a dirty, washed out blonde color. I’ve been thinking recently of going blonde again, but a wheat color, only the problem is that I’m STUCK with red hair now. I got a box of blonde dye this past weekend, and it did NOTHING to my hair, except lighten it a shade, which you really can’t tell there’s a difference.
Other than soaking my head in peroxide, is there another way to get rid of the red and go blonde again???
As someone who has inadvertently dyed her hair blue, green, and orange (all separate occasions) during various home hair dyeing adventures, I would highly recommend having it professionally done. Because your blondish hair has been dyed auburn, you’ll need to lift the auburn out and tone the stripped hair, which is difficult to do (if not impossible) with a home hair dyeing kit. True, a trip to the salon is expensive, but after the initial visit you could probably touch up the roots yourself since it’ll be virgin hair. Good luck! Post “before” & “after” photos!
Another vote for the salon. I am a blonde to begin with, and I tried to lighten my hair once with a kit (didn’t want to use Sun-In because I didn’t want to “chemically treat” my hair - heh), and the results were disastrous. My hairdresser needed to wash my hair with laundry detergent to get the excess color out.
If your “regular” salon is too pricey, may I recommend your local Hair Cuttery? When I wanted a change I went in there and had them dye my hair red, and they did a wonderful job for half the price of my regular salon.
I, too, would recommend going to a salon…and not just any salon, but one that specializes in corrective color. Many salons are good at coloring hair from a natural base, but it’s darned tricky to color hair to your liking after it has been colored.
I used to be a true bottled blond and tried to go to a dark blond, my natural color. Total effing disaster and I had to gradually fix it at the salon. It’s worked out beautifully now though.
