E3 2010 Countdown - What Are You Hoping to See?

I’m pretty excited by the fact that Portal 2 is coming to the PS3. And, it’s an actual valve release. Not a port by someone else. That should be pretty awesome.

This motion control stuff hasn’t really grabbed me. I enjoy the Wii and like the motion stuff they have. I just don’t see it as something I would run out and buy. But, hey, maybe I will be blown away by the content and get Move.

I wish there was more meat the the forthcoming PS Plus network. The Xbox had ESPN added in. (I don’t think you need a special outside subscription to access the ESPN content.) Sony would have been well served to have something non games related to entice even more people.

It’s almost depressing to see all these announcements, knowing that I’ll never have the time to play them all. The 3DS lineup is fantastic, and I’m already sitting here with a backlog of DS and Wii games, let alone all the PS3/XBox stuff I’ve never played.

Turns out there’s going to be a Zeld OoT remake for 3DS, along with Paper Mario, and Star Fox.
Borschevsky, I agree… I can’t afford these games.

I think Nintendo had the best confrence. Sony was second. MS was just sad.

A new Twisted Metal has me excited! And flight!!!

One thing I am VERY disappointed in Sony with is their handling of one of my favorite PS titles: Medal of Honor.

Medal of Honor has always been the epitome of WW2 FPS’s…now Sony is changing it to the modern era? I don’t want that. I play MoH to kill nazis, if I want to fight in the Afghan war I’ll play Call of Duty.

Sony doesn’t publish Medal of Honor, EA does.

Oh…good point.
Ok sub “EA” for “Sony”…but my point still stands!

What’s even better is that apparently you’ll be able to simultaneously plug the Squier Strat into the console AND an amplifier simultaneously. In other words, you can listen to yourself playing for real alongside the game’s recorded track. Demoed here.

Yeah, I plan to do that.

I have a Line6 UX2 guitar processor that you can plug into a computer and into your guitar amp or headphones. Then you log into their web site and choose the song you want to play, and the UX2 is automatically configured to model the amp and pedals used by the artist in the real song. I plan to use that with a laptop and feed the output into my guitar amp, and play along with the game. That should not only be a hoot, but it should allow you to hear mistakes you’re making that the game is masking. For example, if your timing is slightly off, but still within the timing window for the note in Rock Band, it will still sound perfect in the game and you’ll get the score. But you’ll hear the timing error through the amp.

You’ll also be able to hear where you’re going wrong when trying to hit fast passages - something just getting a clunk sound and a broken multiplier doesn’t give you enough clues to help you figure out exactly what you’re doing wrong on the current controller. But with the guitar, you’ll hear timing errors, which note was bad, etc.

Recent Penny Arcade basically described how I feel. Reggie is awesome.

I actually posted my E3 opinions to my Facebook, so here’s a cut and paste:

During E3: “miyamoto is sitting in some swank-ass lounge surrounded by booth babes thinking ‘that’s right bitches, realistic zelda with cel shading. fuck you all! it’ll print money!’”

Pre E3: “if yamauchi was still CEO, he’d kick miyamoto in the balls, tell him he can’t phone it in until retirement, and to go back and make ambitious games for the hardcore while shit like wii music could be delegated to the junior r&d teams that need experience. and let eiji aonuma do something else before he runs away screaming, he was ready to do so after windwaker.”

Things I liked at E3:

The Portal 2 trailer
Limbo on XBox Live
Kirby’s Epic Yarn
Vanquish
Killzone 3

Things I didn’t like at E3:

Epic Mickey looked totally generic.
So does the new Zelda.
So many shooters that look pretty much the same.
Natal / Kinect. I was thinking “Wow … Eyetoy games are back.”

Wow, handhelds have come a long way. I saw a trailer for this and said to myself “I thought this was DS-only.” It looked like a Wii game to me.
