EagleCam from Hornby Island, BC

Is anyone else watching this EagleCam from Hornby Island, BC? I’ve been hooked since Thursday. No sound when I first went there, but plenty of sound today.

Very cool. I bookmarked the site and will check back often.

Neat. I didn’t know eagles vocalized so much.

There are two eggs that I saw. I caught the mum/dad switch-off a while ago.

Apparently, it could get ugly at hatching time! The first-born may kill the second-born, who is a “back-up” egg and hatches later, and so is smaller and more vulnerable.

Nature red in tooth and talon…

I saw it on Wenesday when it showed up on Metafilter or someplace. Then it was only a plain white page with some text and links to the streams. The “premium” option for the hatching is new, too.

:frowning: This is so sad… apparently the baby eagles died. According to the original page, “We at Infotec are mourning with the world at the loss of the eaglets. The parents have now left the nest, so we have shut that encoder down.”

There’s a link to find out more details about what happened to the eggs, but I can’t seem to get it to work. I imagine it’s being bombarded with hits right now… :frowning:

Here is the rest of the story, from http://forum.hancockhouse.com/article.php/20060430150923711

Although this pair didn’t produce any chicks this year, I hope the cam and the resultant publicity has brought some people to appreciate the beauty of our coast, and the place that all forms of wildlife* have in the world.

After reading about species extinction and the possible loss of Canada’s polar bears in the next 50 years, I am very sad about the fate of nature in the future.

If it takes EagleCams to get people to care, to be aware, to want to do something to make our world a home for all creatures, not just homo sapiens, bring on the EagleCam next year.

*Except for slugs.

Here’s a page with another eagle cam. Sound, Better picture, and 3 live chicks!

I didn’t realize eagles’ usual vocalizations were quite so high-pitched. I imagined them to sound more like crows.

The same page as the OP links to now says “coming today- new eagle’s nest!” So either they found a new nest to show or the old eagles came back. Keep an eye out!
