Earl Weaver dead at 82

The Oriole managing great has passed away, fittingly on an Orioles fan cruise. And in tribute, see this very NSFW umpire argument.

Wow.

RIP, Earl. You managed some great teams. I recall the great pitching staffs of the 1960s-1970s, Jim Palmer, Dave McNally, and Mike Cuellar.

Aahh… a classic moment! So long Earl of Baltimore, thanks for some good times at 33rd Street. Checked out surrounded by fans, that’s not so bad.

Here’s my favorite Earl Weaver clip. Definitely NSFW.

RIP.

I remember him well. He was not only colorful, but also a great manager, with a great grasp of strategy. I remember reading him explaining why he kept Clay Dalrymple on the roster – someone who never played more than 37 games in a season for the Orioles and had a .224 BA. But he said Dalrymple was important to the team nonetheless because, since they had a third catcher, he was able to substitute for the starting catcher in the middle of the game and not have anyone available if the substitute was injured.

For all his ejections for cursing at the ump, it’s ironic that maybe the one that hurt the Orioles the most was when he merely said “Shag” – the umpire’s name. That was in game 4 of the 1969 World Series. If he had been in the game, he certainly would have protested J. C. Martin’s running to first.

One of baseball’s greats.
