Earth Hour 2009

We’re having dinner with friends, beer steamed mussels on the bbq, have a fire (if hubby will dig a fire pit tomorrow) and watching the stars.

How are other Dopers celebrating Earth Hour?

I’m not doing anything different, though I’m actually half tempted to turn my lights ON during Earth hour!

I rarely turn my lights on, preferring to use only natural light when possible.

I only put my lights on at night when I am doing something that requires me to have light.

I probably would be more open to this idea if it weren’t for those stupid commericals here in the US for an insurance company where it seems like they are saying you have to turn your lights out for an hour or be a jerk.

It’s that kind of thing that makes me want to do the direct opposite of what they want.

I plan on turning extra lights on. If the neighbors ask, I shall exclaim “It’s not my planet monkeyboy!”

 Did Earth Day get downsized or something?

Jeepers, this economy is worse than I thought.

I just now read about that, and I will turn down the “lights” if for nothing else to be mindful of those who have no steady “lights” 24/7.

No, it didn’t get downsized. Earth Hour is worldwide…promoted by World Wildlife Fund…the stars look amazing when the lights are out!

While some people argue the principle is simply ridiculous; that an hour can make that much difference but I believe it’s the significance of it that’s more real.

Anyway, happy Earth Hour to every Doper, everywhere!

Turning off the lights for a while seems to me to be a largely symbolic gesture. I’d rather donate money to the local nature center or a reforestation project. And then just go out and pick up litter.

I somehow doubt that the light pollution from Philadelphia will noticeably decrease.

sounds like a plan, remember to turn off the lights on saturday night, then go pick up litter.

I’ll even turn off the power strips, and the furnace!

Today’s National Post had an interesting take on Earth Hour. It’s certainly something to chew on.

Personally, I’m sitting this one out. There’s too much hoop-dee-do and not enough real message getting through, to the point that a whole lot of people seem to have missed the point - turning off the lights for an hour doesn’t nullify their SUV-driving, bottled-water-swilling, non-recycling, hyper-consumerist lifestyles. I’ll stick to making small changes on a daily basis instead - ride my bike more, buy less crap, and create less waste.

The worst are the businesses. Tim Horton’s is proudly declaring they’ll turn off their lights but continue serving coffee… so in other words, they’ll still be open, still be running all their appliances, still be pouring coffee into disposable paper cups, and still have enough lights on to serve their patrons. Way to save the environment, Timmy Ho’s.

(Last year, the city through it would be awesome to throw a big concert to celebrate Earth Hour… complete with lights and soundsystem. Yeah, I bet that was really energy-efficient)

I’m not doing a damned thing. Celebrate Earth Day? Pffff…

ETA: Or hour even. Puleeze.

From the website:

What the heck does ‘voting earth’ mean? Are we all going to be shipped off to Saturn if Earth loses?

Are there any other candidates? Can we be sure of a free and fair democratic process? How are the votes going to be counted?

It may well be a symbolic gesture (goodness knows there are enough of those these days) but I’m going to turn a few lights on, carry on as normal and therefore vote ‘NO’.

I’m going to turn all the lights in the house on and roast the tires on my Trans Am in the driveway until there is a big cloud of blue smoke. The whole mass hysteria regarding global warming is quite humorous to me.

It’s like the latest fad that all the cool people just HAVE to get in on. 10 years and no one will be talking about it anymore than they talk about the coming ice age that was just around the corner in the early 70’s.

But I’m one of the thousand points of light! I fear the consequences if I shut down and there were 999, or LESS.

Bah humbug.

This is the first I’ve heard of this. I’ll be out of the house then anyways so I guess they’ll be off no matter what.

Millions of us were forced to participate in Earth Week in December. My lights will be on without guilt tomorrow.

My youngest daughter has been talking about this for the last few days so I am sure our lights will be out.

We enjoyed it!!

I went for a walk. I’m sure I’m the only one in my backwards little town who’s heard of Earth hour…or even the Earth for that matter. We are more known for raping it than anything else.
