Earthquake in San Jose - 5.1 (10/25/22)

Or if it could be configured reasonably for distance. Pretty sure no one here in Sacramento felt it, but we got the alert.

How so I sign up for those? Thanks

Didn’t sign up for anything. I have an Android phone and the alerts just came by themselves. Seems like an OS thing since there was no special app. Might require a recent Android version.

Aha, thanks. Sadly I creak under the hegemony of Big Fruit. Though I see there are free earthquake trackers in the app store, maybe I’ll play with some when I’m home from SE Asia in tomorrow. Though I don’t know how you’d evaluate an earthquake tracker without some quakes.

xkcd anticipated this exact issue:

ISTR the alert I got came from Google, if that helps.

(digs into phone settings) I’m on a Samsung phone running Android 12. Under Settings, there’s a menu for Safety and emergency. In that menu, there’s an item for earthquake alerts (it’s a slide toggle). It says it gets its info from ShakeAlert. I also saw on Instagram today an ad for an app called MyShake. Googling says that the MyShake app does exist for iOS, while one can also sign up for alerts via USGS/FEMA. There’s also another app for both OSes, ShakeAlertUSA.

Yeah, the MyShake app woke me up at 2:34am, but I didn’t feel any shaking in the Sacramento area. I needed to get up at 3:00 because I had an early flight, but it was still annoying.
