Shit. I’m in a skyscraper and it was no fun at all. Just as I was taking my first bite of lunch too.
I felt it(sorta) out here in the Central Valley. My phone went off with a Google Alert and just as I got the screen open, my lamp tapped the wall a couple of times and I felt a moment of wooziness. Didn’t actually feel any shaking, though.
I didn’t notice anything in Sacramento, and my pets are all calm.
Report from my daughter, who works at Happy Hollow (near downtown SJ):
“My trailer office at work is rickety already, so we just thought a big truck was passing by Definitely felt it, but it was pretty short and not strong enough to do any damage”
I tend to panic in earthquakes, no doubt originating from a big one that happened in southern California when I was 12 years old. For this one, I ran down the hallway to I don’t know where until someone grabbed me and stood me in a doorway. I clung for dear life and took deep slow breaths while the (16 story) building swayed for several minutes. It wasn’t a huge one, true, but skyscrapers tend to amplify and prolong the shaking and swaying. Me no like.
You in the wrong place, T!
Yep, but I can’t quit the Pacific Rim. I’ll just have to hope that a 9 pointer doesn’t strike between now and when I check out.
It’s been quite awhile since we’ve had a fairly substantial quake (one where you can really feel the shaking). Actually, I’ve been thinking one is overdue.
I was putting my clothes on after a dermatology appointment on the 4th floor at Kaiser on Cottle Rd. The shaking definitely got my attention, by the time I wondered if I should be worried it was over.
I’m way up in the northern part of San Fran and I felt this one just fine. If you had told me it was all the way down in San Jose I would have guessed it was more like a 6.0.
I’m in Sunnyvale but was asleep (I was awake all night), so I didn’t feel it at all. I’ll have to ask my wife about it.
I hope everyone is okay. @teelabrown I hope you weren’t too frightened. Being high up in a building would not be a fun place to be.
Pretty cool, that seismometer!
My wife works on the 5th floor on a 6-floor building and she said the rocking was mild but it lasted a looooong time.
Technically it’s the property of the USGS. But it is in my garage, and possession is nine-tenths of the law, so…
With your luck, I wouldn’t worry about it.
The MyShake app stayed silent and I didn’t feel a thing in Vallejo.
How does one wind up with a USGS seismometer in their garage?
It’s part of their NetQuakes program:
They were looking for volunteers several years ago to host them, and my area had a bit of a dead zone, so I put in the request. Looks like their funding sorta dried up, but I can still see the events show up on their web site.
That’s pretty cool, doc.
I’m glad you are okay. If you need a break, come to Minnesota for a blizzard.
I was at home in Aptos (near Santa Cruz). It went on a while. Most of the pictures on my walls upstairs were cockeyed after. Definitely got my attention.
