I just got an email notifying me that I’m entitled to $149.99 from a class action lawsuit filed against Ebay and settled in the state of California on 1/11/2005. I think this is spam trolling for my account info.
But, if I’m wrong, $150 would be nice. Has anyone heard anything that substantiates the existence of this case?
I looked it up on Lexis-Nexis in the CA state court section and found zip, but I’m no expert at legal research. I checked Snopes and found the PayPal case which is true, but that means squat here. I also search the SDMB Archives and came up with another zippo.
You were right to immediately be suspicious since this notice came in an email, and not on official letterhead from a law firm. Reputable law firms will not notify anyone of anything by email. It’s just not done.
What information did they ask of you? If they want you to call a number, that’s one thing: it can’t hurt to check that out. However, if they’re claiming you can get your $150 by replying with your name, address, and bank account info, then it’s a scam.
Not to mention, seven days is about 11 months and three weeks faster than you’d ever realistically expect to receive a disbursement on a class action suit or settlement. And that’s if they’re acting quickly, which they usually aren’t.
is nothing any lawyer worth his salt would write. It is, however, what someone who doesn’t know what he’s talking about might write in an effort to sound high-falutin’.
