I believe his exact words were, ‘sucked big hairy donkey balls.’ And there was an accompanying gesticulation. Or maybe you’d call it more of a pantomime. Hard to describe.
Jesus, it’s just a title. Now if Mr. Towers had posted something like, “It was kinda long, and like boring, and totally lame, and I thought it was hella stupid, and everybody in this movie, like, sucked,” then I might agree with you. Since he gave specific examples of what he felt were suckulent elements of the movie (examples I mostly agree with, although I still thought the movie was OK overall), I have no problem with leading with “Superman sucked”.
But she had the best line in the movie! (“Weren’t there two of them?”)
And am I the only Doper to notice that one of the pilots on the shuttle was Sir Richard “VirginGalactic” Branson?
Overall, I liked the film, but I agree it did have it’s weak points. One thing that they should have done, is have Lois remember that Clark was Superman. Yeah, yeah, I know he did the whole Jedi mind trick in SII so she’d forget everything (well, almost everything as there’s hints that she didn’t lose all of her memory), but having her memory come back would have added tension to the scenes with her and Clark.
The eavesdropping scene didn’t bother me (Come on, be honest, if you had Supes ability, you’d do it too! Yes, you would, it’d be just too tempting for you to resist.), but when he flew off afterwards, one of two things should have happened: 1.) He zips off to some remote place like the Moon, and proceeds to pound the shit out of something like a mountain or 2.) He finds someone committing a crime and proceeds to beat the shit out of them.
I would have liked to have seen more of Luthor in the film, and I think that he should have had a better defined Plan of Evil[sup]TM[/sup]. I also think that he wouldn’t have quietly gone out to the ocean and dropped the crystal out there, but would have announced it to the world.
I saw the movie yesterday. I’m a huge Superman fan and the movie was just… ok.
I liked the portrayal of Superman and Clark. No problems there. I think he showed the right amount of emotion and internal conflict, while ultimately doing what was right and necessary.
And Lex was done perfectly! I actually empathized with him, in a megalomaniacal sort of way. If I ever turn evil, I want to be like Lex Luthor. Kitty was good, too.
Lois… eh, not so good. Not enough fire and spit. Lois’ son was cute and well played. It’s a shame he’ll have to die in the sequel.
The action was great. My main complaint of the movie is it ran too long. It should have ended with Superman seemingly dead in his own impact crater. Everything after that would’ve fit better in the next movie.
Some questions: why was old man Kent dead? That seemed rather pointless.
Were the voice and image of Jor-El direct copies from the original Superman? Looked very familiar, but it’s been a while since I’ve watched it.
