Eclipse!

I guess I am not too surprised that the SDMB is not frothing at the mouth with anticipation at the release Wednesday of the latest Twilight Saga move, Eclipse. But for the world at large, this a pretty big deal.

I may be in the minority that actually enjoyed New Moon, and I think Eclipse is a much stronger book. But David Slade (who?) directing? Anyone seen it in screenings? Any thoughts that don’t boil down to “I think Stephanie Meyer is a horrible writer”?

Wow, the hate (or ambivalence) is stronger than I thought! Well, I will see it in IMAX on Wednesday evening and report back, if for nothing else than to hear myself talk.

I’ve got tickets to see it Friday with a group from work. I know the books aren’t exactly great literature, but they were entertaining and I enjoyed them. Ditto the first two movies. So don’t think you’re the only one here who likes them! I am anxious to see if the pacing for the newest movie is a little faster than the last one; I don’t know how much more angsty glaring I can stand.

almost there… as ive said before on many different boards… i WILL be there to see the breaking dawn movie, hoping it to to be book accurate, just to see the look on parents faces when all the rediculous shit goes down. Sexed unconcious, vampire c-section, pedo werewolf… do want!

I heard you could go blind from looking directly at the movie.

I saw Twilight on cable out of morbid curiosity. It was pretty bad, but it also seemed to be somewhat hyperaware which was interesting, and lil Jacob was sweet and the bad guy vampire was attractive.

I actually saw New Moon on the big screen, once for the new improved Jacob eye candy, and once to keep my Twilight friend company. It was again fairly bad, although also filmed well and with some hyperaware nods.

I’ll likely see Eclipse twice too, once for my Mom, and once for my Twilight friend, although the story seems less interesting then New Moon.

I’m looking forward to Breaking Dawn, assuming they don’t pussy out on the twisted birthing scene…

Well, saw it last night, and I liked it! I think it helped that the theater was sold out, full of pre-teen fans, and they were all very vocal in their enjoyment. Normally, I get annoyed with the audience taking the focus off the movie, but last’s night experience seemed enhanced by it. Cheering during the proposal scene, lots of reaction to Jacob’s appearance, appreciation of the subtle one-liners in reference to the series, etc.

As a negative, I was actually disappointed by the IMAX print of the film. It seemed grainy not very vivid. I fear I have been corrupted/spoiled by Blu-ray, a 65" TV and a 7.1 system at home, but I have enjoyed other mega-productions (like Avatar) in the theater; this one just didn’t do it for me. One of the things I most appreciated about both Twilight and New Moon was the gorgeous scenery of Canada. I will rent this one on BR when it comes out and see what it looks like there.

I was surprised by how much of the book was included into the movie, and every time I thought to myself that they would gloss over a plot point, they put it in. Maybe I should not have been, but I did not expect inclusion of Jasper’s backstory, or Bree Tanner as much as was there. At times, this much detail drove the movie along ploddingly, where it seemed like they were going out of their way to include all the details at the expense of plot flow. I would have liked more show, less tell in some scenes, and a better handling of the “wolf telepathy” angle. I would have appreciated a more…sentimentally appealing actor as Seth. And geez, enough with the damn kissing every two seconds.

But I am a fan of “world-building” movies and books, and I do feel like a part of the Twilight universe while watching these movies, just as I do with the books. On that point, I think in was a success.

And Nightingale, I like the angsty! As a 36-year-old guy with no kids, I don’t get too much teen angst anymore, so it can be refreshing to revisit it. :o

I prefer Emily and the Really Sexy Vampyre myself.

The ONLY way you’d get me to watch any of the Twicrap series (besides at gunpoint) would be with Rifftrax enhancements…

Line?
I’m Harpo!

Sorry, don’t mean to threadshit, just not a fan of sparkly emopires

I am totally frothing at the mouth for this movie. My hatecrush on StephEnie Meyer and the Twilight series knows no bounds and I love the anticipation of waiting for a movie I know is going to inflame my soul, my very being, with the pleasure of snark.

It’s like the opposite of Harry Potter anticipation. The yin to my yang. Loathing so fierce it’s almost love.

sigh Too bad I have a really good Netflix stache this week. I may catch it next week.

My BFF (a grown ass woman, don’t get confused) loves Twilight, so I’ve been dragged to all three, including Eclipse last night. I’ll say that the first two were pretty damn bad- lots of angsty teenage staring, weird cutting away, forced dialog, pained expressions, etc.

Eclipse was great, though. No lie. I really enjoyed it. I think the new director really changed it up nicely and was just what the series needed. I mean, Edward still had his pained expressions and Kristen Stewart didn’t suddenly become Meryl Streep or anything, but it was good entertainment. I liked the flash backs and how they were handled, the “epic fight” was well done, and even the movie just looked better- better lighting, better pans, just much better.

I really did enjoy it- much more so than the other ones.

Oh, I will say: the sexism kind of grates on me, but I knew it was there before going in, so there’s that. Bella’s prized virginity, all the men in her life making decisions for her, the forced kisses and shit from random dudes. Eh, expected.

Best line? “Doesn’t this guy own a shirt?” Because damnit, that’s what we all were thinking.

Oh come on, that’s rude. I don’t like Twilight either. So you know what I do? I stay out of threads about Twilight. You should try that yourself.

My wife like the Twilight stuff so I have seen the first two on DVD. I don’t care for the first, and can stand watching the second. I am sure I will watch the new one at some point and I have actually seen some good reviews for it so I am guessing I will be entertained.

I’m not sure I agree with your perspective about the sexism in all cases. In the books it is pretty well explained that it is Edward’s “virtue” that he is protecting by avoiding sex, and not Bella’s. Edward consistently defaults to whatever Bella wants to do, especially as the story progresses, and supports her in all her decisions, even to the point of being willing to step aside if she chooses Jacob. The forced kisses were dumb, and it is used as a plot point. Jacob feels very guilty about the first one.

Second best line, in the tent: “I’m hotter than you.”

ETA: To the disparagers of Twilight: I’m not sure that a board where Buffy, Lord of the Rings and Firefly are idolized is a great place to cast stones about crappy writing and movies…

Oh boy…

:dubious:

Yeah, in fairness, I haven’t read the books, so I acknowledge that it might be explained a little better with that perspective.

Lol. I meant it more with regards to posting. I had gotten a link to this thread from someone I know who likes it. I’m a dear and loving friend, so I figured I’d read it for her sake.

I went with my nieces to see it, because I’m the best uncle ever.

It wasn’t the worst movie I’ve ever seen. I honestly expected a lot more unintentional comedy than it delivered (though that whole tent scene killed me). I don’t know if it’s because I’m an adult or because Hollywood has desensitized me, but the movie was so conspicuously chaste that it ended up coming across as kinda weird. Then again, if you’re a centuries old vampire originally from a more conservative time, presumably with numerous notches on your bedpost, then maybe you’ve grown out of ravenous lust.

Nope. Edward is a 100 year old virgin, according to the books.
