Huh? what? where? I am not sure what the question is (or whether I am being whoosed), so I will answer all I can and hope for the best:
Chorizo is to Spanish what sausage is to English. A common euphemism for the penis.
Cruz de Navajas (Cross of Blades/knives) means a knife fight. The first and only time I have heard it used for that is on the Mecano song of that name. Still, that song was so hugely popular in every country that speaks Spanish that everybody knows what you mean.
And, rather than apologise or explain, just let the thread go on for some days and then closed it without further ado. Typical. That’s why I hate anyone in a position of authority. They are all incompetent and corrupt.
I say “take care of yourself” all the time. Sometimes “watch yourself” but never really “Be careful” and I don’t know anyone else who does the same as moi.
I’ve used “take care” and “take care of yourself” as well. But never “be careful”. Seems very odd. Sounds like either a threat or the Hill Street Blues opening.
No. “Take care” is weird. Take care of what? The goldfish?
These internets is wonderful things. I just found out “sapo” means “soap” and “colibri”
and that
but also that
but nowhere did I find instructions for wiping the floor with colibri’s sorry ass. Then I thought it was probably not a good idea and a turkey or ostrich would work out better.
Not being Spanish, I might find many expressions you use as “weird.” Being somewhat Southern US(Virginia), I’ve used “take care” as a parting expression all my life, although not as much as other expressions.
The article did say that the contestant was from the South. If the contest were held in Brooklyn, then his use of them might have been a little more suspect.
Ahem, I see I have failed to adequately express and convey my point of view which is exactly the same as yours, i.e.: I was responding to leander and saying that no expression is intrinsically weird but that it is only a matter of usage and that if you try to analyze them literally they might sound weird.
I mostly say, ‘peace’ but often I say, “be easy”, which I guess we have shortened from ‘take it easy’, which is I guess a bit like ‘take care’ which is a form of "take care of yourself’ which could be interpreted as, “I will cut your throat from ear to ear.”
