Egyptian Flagman - The Next Arab Hero?

So the Twitterverse and the Arab street are both going bonkers over the Egyptian protestor who scaled the Israeli Embassy’s flagpole and tore the flag down, especially since the thousands there gathered to protest Israel’s retaliation against Gaza had spent the past few hours shooting fireworks at it to try and set it on fire.

Tensions are escalating between Israel and Gaza… it doesn’t look like the Egyptian people are going to let their new government sit by and do nothing if Israel launches full-scale retribution against the Occupied Territories.

Was the Egyptian Flagman just a one-night thing, or are our kids gonna be reading about what just happened in their history books?

If that’s all it takes to be an Arab hero then their standards are pretty damn low.

But, really, Egypt is the county in which an idealistic Jewish Arabist law student can be arrested for supporting a democratic movement, so anything is possible in that cesspool.

From watching an hour of Al Jazeera, the BBC and CNN last night, I think you have the wrong end of the stick. They’re protesting the shooting, allegedly by Israeli soldiers, of Egyptian soldiers on Egyptian soil. Any Gaza/Palestinian-oriented rhetoric is ‘the usual suspect’ in the Arab world, and incidental to the genesis of the protest.

“Cesspool”? That seems awfully dismissive of millions of people.

But fairly standard for the Dope I am afraid.

I agree. Egypt has the potential to be a great nation, and it would be a shame if they wasted their energies on external conflicts instead of on reform.
