Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind - should I get it?

My cousin has been telling me a lot about this game, and it sounds pretty good. I’ve never been particularly drawn to RPGs though. I played and liked Diablo 2, and Quest for Glory 1-5, but thats about it. I also played a few hours of Final Fantasy X, but I didn’t get into it. So, is this game only for hardcore RPG fans, or can a casual gamer like it too?

Damn, wrong forum, sorry. Could a mod please move this to CS? Thanks.

I believe that a casual gamer would enjoy it. It’s not as hack and slash as Diablo 2, and has more depth than Final Fantasy X (as well as Diablo 2, naturally). It’s first person, as you’re probably aware, and thus gives you a good since of immersion into the rather complex gaming world. Your character is completely customizable- that is you don’t have to necessarily abide by class rules. I’ve been playing it since it’s release, and still frequently I discover another depth or find myself thinking, “Wow, that’s truly awesome/surprising/original.” The other day my rogue read a play that was twenty pages in length and even had a plot twist. In fact, there are six novels worth of text in the game, and over 3,000 NPCs you can talk to. There are even secret societies to investigate…

Of course, if you don’t just want depth and intrigue, there are plenty of hardcore action opportunities for mage, fighter and rogue alike. Literally there are over 300 various tombs, crypts, dungeons and ruins to explore and conquer filled with all sorts of bad guys, beasts, and loot.

The game has it all, really. The depth, action, intrigue, customization, nonlinearity, and originality to attract most any PC gamer, even non RPG fans.

I would give it a try, but I will warn you that the game can be daunting for its open-endedness. At the beginning, you’re handed a little package and told to take it to some shmoe named Caius Cosades, in the town of Balmorra. 'Course, if you don’t want to take him the package, you don’t have to… I didn’t give it to him until I’ve been playing for about four weeks (game time).

I’ve been playing it for a while and I’m STILL incredibly impressed at how much there is to do.

As with all my gaming opinions, please rent it first. Even after reading another person negative review, I might still rent a game. I might have found something that I liked but the reviewer didn’t. That said …

I love this game. I rented it for five days and kept it for another five (I don’t have the fifty dollars on me to buy it yet.) Just yesterday I found a talking mudcrab merchant! It’s true! For those who haven’t played before, a mucrab is one of the low level creatures that you cut you teeth on early in playing. They are mindless animals that you can use for the combat experience and then harvest their meat for cash or alchemy mixology. I’d like to say I found found it completely on my own but I did get a little help on his location. If you do get to talk to him, he has a ton of cash on him and he will by any expensive item for full or near full price. Now I need to find a recall spell and go back.

Soooooo much to do in this game. I am lucky I started to workout before playing this game. That way, when my ass is glued to the sofa playing Morrowind for hours, it’s not expanding geometrically.

I’m pretty sure you’ll like it, just be forewarned if you want it to look really nice you’ll have to have a fairly nice system. Oh yeah is it just more or does the water in this game so frickin’ neat?

Got it for Xbox this past weekend. I have never been into any RPGs at all. Having said that, this game rocks. The lady and I have been playing for about a week now. There are so many directions you can go with this game it is insane.

Coming from a non-RPG game player, go get this game. Today.

Also try gamefaqs.com However, they have forums & walkthroughs there & stuff & people talk
about games & what they think of them.

We have it. We love it. We’re 60 or 70 hours into this thing now, and there’s no end in sight. Of course, that doesn’t sound like a lot of time to real gamers, but remember - you can finish many games, playing them thoroughly, in this much time. Here, the end hasn’t even peeked over the horizon. (You could go through this lots faster, of course, if you weren’t as anal retentive as my LO and I are. We must get, and complete, ALL the quests. We must explore EVERYTHING. No stone unturned is our computer gaming motto, and that is a daunting prospect in this game.)

Of course, as others have said, that very open-endedness can occasionally cause problems; we did exactly what SPOOFE did and gave Caius Cosades a miss for quite some time. I mean, he’s just an old man with a skooma problem. Why hurry? (Actually, we were too busy in Seyda Neen and environs.) This is without a doubt the richest gaming environment I’ve found, in terms of things to do and player choices, and it’s a wee bit overwhelming at first.

By the way, Amazing Tiki God, it isn’t just you. The water is cool.

YES.

If you liked the Quest for Glory series, you’ll probably like Morrowind.

  • It would definitely be better to exceed the minimum system requirements.
  • I’ve played for days, and I finally broke down and went to a “cheat” site, because I thought I done most of the major quests. Turns out I missed seeing a bar by about 10 feet that was pivotal to the game. But I DON’T recommend using a cheat or walkthrough…I don’t want to get into a spoiler…but let’s just say I was enjoying the game more before…
  • It pays to be particularly clever about how you handle the stores and bartering.
  • Put extra emphasis on getting your speed up. It makes the travel go faster, and also makes you fight better.
