I’m watching TV, so can’t provide a cite, but a few minutes ago there was a comment that Trump 2024 voters were likely to exceed Biden 2020 voters. If “tens of millions of people who voted last time stayed home” then that seems unlikely.

Like I said before, Trump never conceded. Neither should Harris. Let him sweat it out while she says, “I have not conceded.” Donald, your reply? Even if she doesn’t past your win?
The difference is, Harris is a grown-up, and believes in democracy. Refusing to concede is what fascists do.
I am all of those things, as well, and I am completely perplexed that Trump has won. So sickening! A truly frightening situation.

I’ve been shell-shocked reading the news all morning. And if I, white straight male who doesn’t even live in the US feel that way, I can’t even imagine what my friends across the ocean are experiencing, particularly those belonging to minorities. Don’t let the bastards grind you down.

It’s basically 2004 all over again:
- A top 5 worst American president wins despite having shown in his first term how terrible he is.
- Not only that, but he wins the popular vote, despite having lost it in the preceding election.
- And not only that, but his party has control of Congress too.
So I was wrong in the thread I was doing on the topic of how Trump could win. Dead wrong. Deeply wrong. Because I was wrong in a way that I didn’t think was possible and I have not seen advanced much by commenters and posters here: that the American people really, truly wanted Trump and MAGA to run the country.
Not a sneaky clinching of the electoral college. Genuine popular support. A mandate. This is what the American people wanted.
And they really, truly wanted an imbecilic war criminal to run the country in 2004. But then they wanted Obama in 2008?! And then Trump in 2016?!
One could get whiplash. But I think I can say in simple terms why these shifts have happened: modern governance just doesn’t work very well. It doesn’t make people happy. And no wealthy democracy has figured out how to make it work well. So the people here and in other countries accept the template–the paradigm, if you will–of governance while blaming successive politicians and governments for failing them.
It’s like switching brands of cough drops for chronic tuberculosis.
On a side note, but an important one-if anyone feels the need to step away and seek out counseling and/or mental health resources or even just funny cat videos obviously I encourage you to do so. This is an ugly situation and certainly a shock to the system to many of us.
