Election Day Omnibus thread

You can keep repeating this mantra, but you are wrong. Trump won handily among men under 30. Good luck outliving them.

This reminds me of comedians telling massive crowds how the wokies are taking away their free speech before making a joke they told you they weren’t allowed to make.

No, some Democrats have called Republican supporters fascists since long before they actually were. I first started paying any kind of attention to politics during the Bush/Kerry election, and plenty of people were calling Bush a fascist and insisting he would use the Iraq war to make himself president for life.

This narrative that no one is willing to call out the Right is ridiculous. Plenty of people call out the Right, and more deservedly so these days. And yet, Trump made big gains with minority voters.

Yes, I know it’s satire, but IMHO misses the point. The minorities that voted Trump most likley did so because they no longer see themselves as minorities. In that sense Democrats became a victim of their own success.

I feel like for the past decade Democrats have hoped that demographics would eventually be on their side and they said stuff like “as the country gets more brown, it’s going to get more Democratic.” It just hasn’t panned out that way and I’ve sensed for some time now that Hispanics particularly were NOT going to be a reliable blue voting block. As soon as “Latinx” became a thing I thought to myself that every Hispanic person I know was the EXACT opposite of the kind of person who would use that word. We’re talking about a group of people who are in the main very pariochal and lean into machismo, and I do not say this to be derogatory, it’s just the reality of it.

Democrats need to do some soul searching about why they’re losing men, and how they can win them back.

Well, we know where he stands now.

Former President George W. Bush has released his first statement on the 2024 presidential election, congratulating his fellow Republican, President-elect Donald Trump.

“I congratulate President Trump on his election as 47th President of the United States of America, as well as Vice President-elect J.D. Vance and their families,” he said in a statement released about Wednesday 11 a.m. ET.

They need to figure out how to dumb things down for the US voters, without just lying, like Trump.

I mean, look at tariffs. Trump says, “Tariffs are wonderful! China is paying us billions! Every other country will too!” It’s a stupid lie, but it’s stupid enough almost anyone can understand it, if they accept the lie.

How to refute that? Sure, we can explain it to them, but as we’ve seen time and again, they don’t understand the explanation.

We need to find a simple answer that even a MAGA can understand. Alas, I have no idea what that is. “Trump is a fucking idiot” isn’t it, though.

This isn’t something new, this is the same faction that supported slavery, segregation, the disenfranchisement of women, illegality of homosexuality, and so on. They’ve always had to be outlived, not persuaded. All those men who voted for Trump? They will hate everyone but themselves for the rest of their lives, and nothing will convince them otherwise.

Honestly, I am allowed to hate people for their politics. This is perfectly ethical behaviour.

Emmanuel Macron also declined to endorse either candidate and called Trump to congratulate him, so I guess Macron and Bush are just a couple of Fascists together.

See? This is PRECISELY what I’m talking about. Bush, a former Republican president, did not endorse Trump. His silence should speak volumes. But instead, he didn’t endorse Kamala either, so that makes him a fascist. OK, bud.

There’s a reason why no one took us seriously when we said ‘OK, but Trump is actually fascistic this time’, and that’s because every Republican since Nixon has been the Antichrist. When something that was ACTUALLY far outside the norms happened - the false slates of electors and the insurrection on Jan 6 - that should have been when we seriously deployed terms like “fascist”. Instead, we’d cheapened the term for two decades by using it the way Republicans use “communism”.

Fascist support is something that Macron is known for? Of course he’d support Trump.

One white male I was talking to predicted that minorities would vote Trump because “they’re tired of handouts.”

How would you criticize the Iraq War and Bush? enforce no Fascist comparisons? Kind of untenable and not helpful advice there.

and hold on. The rhetoric from the right at that time was “you are all a bunch of Islamic terrorist loving traitors” it was wild.

What? No, I don’t think it is.

??? What evidence do you have that he supports Trump? He clearly favored Harris, even if he didn’t think it was his place to offer an endorsement.

Googling, the news appears to say he does, as do the few French people I know.

I’d criticize their motivations, as well as their incompetent execution. Do you think every bad war in history was fought by fascists?

I don’t know what you mean by “enforce”. You’re free to call Bush a fascist, and I’m free to think the comparison is checks forum lacking.

Trump is exceedingly unpopular in France, as you must surely know.

It is normal and wise for other heads of state of government to remain neutral about allies’ elections and offer generic words of congratulation upon candidates winning elections.

Yes. Harris didn’t have a clear, or at least clearly broadcasted, immigration policy. Trump had an emphatic immigration policy. And the left had policies that most voters disagreed with, and Harris got associated with them. And the left said that Trump’s immigration policy was racist. Harris lost on that issue because she was associated with the leftist policy. And my opinion is that because she lost the argument on immigration and a few other policies because she wasn’t trusted to not be left wing, she lost the election.

I mean, you criticize the rhetoric on the left as harsh and off putting (which can be legit). However at no time was it ever as toxic as the right’s. Plus the right’s rhetoric has devolved into wild conspiracy nonsense.

Reflect. How could the left possibly police calling Trump/Bush/Etc as fash? This isn’t helpful advice.

Because rounding up children and putting them in cages and all the other things he did are racist. And have little to do with immigration. It’s about hating brown people, immigrant or not.

And calling for the persecution of their own base would hardly help the Democrats.

Paraphrase of the above: Let me explain this to you in simple terms because you’re stupid. And then please vote for my side.

Sure, and if a Communist wing ever forms in the Democratic party Team Party/MAGA style and takes over, it might prove difficult for Republicans to convince people that no, this time the people they’re calling communists are ACTUALLY COMMUNISTS, they aren’t just being unhinged. Fortunately or unfortunately, that’s not a very likely scenario.

I’m not expecting the left to police anything; I’m responding to specific people using that rhetoric about people like Macron, or Bush, or 72% of non college educated white Americans.
