Election Day Omnibus thread

Your second sentence indicates that the first sentence means that millions of people are living a lie. You are correct. They ARE “personally” evil, period. And, they indeed refuse to admit that fact to themselves.

Perhaps some will enjoy death-bed self-revelations. (I’d add “the sooner, the better,” but that would be…rude.)

Some things can be divined from the results themselves because of the way the population is distributed, but the best information will come sometime next year when surveys like the Pew validated voter survey come out. The gender gap especially will really have to wait until then because women are evenly distributed everywhere and there’s no way to look at the map and say ahh, yes, here are where the women vote.

Exit polls are not very good for this kind of thing because of the way they’re weighted. In 2016, there was a whole aggrieved narrative about how a majority of white women voted for Trump, which ended up not being correct when better data came out (by which time all the tears had already been shed).

Doesn’t surprise me at all. Besides the overall economic issues which would have hurt Biden or Harris in this race among Hispanics, other issues specifically hurt her with this demographic generally or with certain parts of it in particular. The border crisis, abortion policy, and gender issues immediately come to mind here.

The problem for Democrats is that this isn’t limited to this race or this candidate This article is a great read on the subject.

But the setup for that was the claim that “Donald Trump said things that lots of US voters agreed with.” That’s where it starts, is the idea; you can’t say it’s a case of You Made Me This Way — about the response to that — if they already agreed with that.

He promised to only be dictator for a day and we know he is a man of his word. So, only one day, then get back to the norm.

That’s the danger of running on social issues. A significant portion of Latinos are religious and lean more towards conservative on social issues. It’s a bad idea to count on them just because you think you deserve the minority vote.

Oh no doubt. There will be plenty of damage. I just don’t expect Trump to become a well oiled fascist machine. He works on whim and how he thinks he’s perceived by his fans. President Vance in a couple of years might be a different story.

Well, they’re going to get what they voted for. I don’t think they’re going to like it.

Very unfortunately, all the rest of us are going to get it too.

I said something similar a little while ago in this thread…

I hope we’re right.

You’d think we would have figured this out by now and changed strategy.

So look at illegal immigration. Lots of Americans are concerned about illegal immigration including many non-white voters. Trump’s message was that he was going to attack illegal immigration. Harris’s message on illegal immigration was wishy-washy. And the US left-wing said that Trump, and by association his illegal immigration platform, was racist. So right-leaning voters who were concerned about illegal immigration had a choice between someone they agreed with or someone with an unclear policy backed by people who called them racist. That’s a pretty easy choice.

When the voters face that choice over a few issues, then there has to be something special about the candidate they don’t instinctively side with. Harris was nothing special.

What’s SO FUCKING STUPID about that is that Harris’ policy would go after illegal immigrants.

If Harris or Biden had their way, we would fund our immigration courts so that we could get through the backlog of asylum seekers - who are currently the main driving issue behind immigration - and most likely deny the majority of them asylum, then deport them.

Only around 30% of asylum cases are granted. Given the fact that the backlog consists of many people who came to the US after the backlog developed, who have no chance of getting asylum, but who knows that it will take years for their case to be heard - that number might drop even lower once we start processing all these cases.

There may be a possible world where the Democrats were able to communicate this message - that it’s not a choice between open borders versus mass deportation, but a choice between intelligently and compassionately sorting through asylum seekers and deporting the ones who shouldn’t be granted asylum, versus knee jerk blind deportations.

This message is factually accurate, but it seems that Democrats find it impossible to communicate.

I dunno. Trump said a lot of things; not all coherent or cogent. Its possible things played out like that (I’m not American and didn’t follow what the Dems were saying).

I just don’t buy that they chased voters to Trump with their intolerance. I don’t buy it. People voted for Trump because they liked him (or his message, or whatever). Dems attacking voters doesn’t feel … right.

They never would have because they are “evil”. They’ll live their whole lives hating everyone else. People like that are outlived, not persuaded.

And much of the problem is the unwillingness to call them on it. The Democrats have spent decades trying to pander to them and it never works.

By which he means “persecute and kill people who aren’t white”. Immigration has nothing to do with it, being an American citizen won’t protect anyone much less their documentation status.

Which is what his supporters want, a murderous racist crusade.

Still Too Early To Know Which Minority To Scapegoat:

This.

I feel like I’ve been infected with a disease called “Donald Trump” since he won in 2016. I have obsessed about him, ruminated, churned my thoughts, and posted here hundreds of times. “To no avail.” I permitted him to take up residence in my head and he has lived there for eight years. Not always front and center, but somewhere in the background. Enough! Today I’m going to get the last of the obsession out of my system, and maybe for a few more days. But after that, he doesn’t exist for me any more. I’m going to put myself in a bubble and ignore what goes on outside of it. Going over and over this stuff doesn’t change reality and only makes me ill. I don’t know how long I will be able to stay in my bubble, but that is my plan for the immediate and at least short-term future. I’m going to purge him from my system and allow other things to fill those craters and pockmarks: nature, music, poetry, TV & movies, reading novels, my cats, and other undiseased things. I desperately need a break. At least for a while.

Agreed although I’m Republican for Harris, as the newcomer pours dirty water on my windshield or the mayor says he is going to cut services and possibly furlough workers or the gangs take over hotels it’s hard not to vote for the candidate that says he will solve the problem.

If there is one general rule about winning elections it’s that people respond very strongly to affirmative claims.

“I will fix health care”
“I will make you safer”
“I will make the roads better”

Clear, simple, affirmative planks are the cornerstone of winning elections, and Trump had clear, simple, affirmative planks. “Make America Healthy Again” was a great idea; that was obviously gonna get him votes. It’s a pile of shit in my opinion because you don’t make American healthier by handing the keys over to an antivaxxer steroid addict with brain worms. But it’s a clear, affirmative plank based on people wanting to be healthy. I think almost all their planks were lies, of course, but it does work.

You’re making my point for me. One of the issues reported to be an an election factor was inflation. Trump said he’s work to bring down prices. Harris more or less said that the Biden administration had a successful inflation strategy. The left said that Trump’s economic policy was stupid.

People who are concerned about inflation and like what Trump had to say aren’t evil and don’t consider themselves to be stupid. (Side note - I’m not going to engage in a discussion of Trump’s inflation policy in this election day thread.) They’re not going to vote for the side that calls them stupid.

Perception is much more important than facts.

This will be my strategy moving forward.

Bubble gal it is.

Might even detach from the internet unless necessary.
Haven’t decided.
