What was the instrument used in the Electric Prunes’ I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night which comes in on about one minute into the youtube video here?
It’s the reedy oboe’ish sound, but “thicker”, that reminds me of some Egyptian music.
And how could that timbre be replicated on a synthesizer?
The “oboe-ish” sound is a backward-recorded electric guitar. It takes the percussive “attack” out of the sound. Can’t help you with replicating that on a synth, although if you can edit “patches,” you might call up an oboe and tweak the attack.
Thanks Burpo, I’ve listened to the tune backwards a few times and conclude that you’re right. Pretty impressive production for 1966…
Especially when you know they were “ping pong” overdubbing; screw up the last note and you start all over again.
There are several Beatles examples, in particular, “I’m Only Sleeping” (Revolver). I think the Stones might have used it once or twice.
Of course, you can’t duplicate that on “Bandstand,” and I think AB overdid the reverb when guest bands were “playing live.”
