I just saw this movie last night and I’m still basking in the beauty of it. I thought the performances were great. I just found out that it was adapted from a novella by Philip Roth, who is my all-time favorite writer.
I saw it in the theater. I agree with you about the performances, if not the beauty. Penelope Cruz’s character, Consuela, was a beauty, inside and out. A sweeter, kinder girl you could hardly imagine. Ben Kingsley’s character was loathsome, and Patricia Clarkson’s character was pathetic. Those two were ugly, ugly people, rotten inside and to the core. I remember liking Dennis Hopper’s character, and Peter Sarsgaard’s damaged character made an all-too-brief but still powerful appearance.
I’d say more about it but it’s been so long since I saw it I’m not remembering a whole lot. What sticks with me the most is that Penelope Cruz was amazing, as usual, she always is. I just didn’t want there to be 0 replies.
I thought the cinematography was excellent. It was a very quiet film, but it managed to keep Mr. K’s attention to the end (and he’s the type that prefers a quality kill every 15 minutes in a film). I agree that for the most part, Ben Kingsley’s character was loathsome, but then so are many/most of Philip Roth’s male characters (who, in my opinion, are a reflection of his loathsome, misogynistic real-life self). He often objectifies women in his books. It says less about the women and more about him, if you ask me.
