Elementary season four, wishes and predictions

I really liked the season three finale and I hope that Sherlock didn’t relapse after all. I think that it has set up interesting possibilities for season four. Obviously that is going to be a long wait and the season three finale has provided a pretty vague cliffhanger.

What do you think will happen? What are your wishes?

Speaking of season four, I have my own idea for the premiere, that would also be an adaptation of an original Sherlock Holmes story.
It turns out that Sherlock didn’t relapse, despite getting very close to, but he actually ended up murdering Oscar in self defense (Oscar having regained consciousness and attacking him with a knife). There was no evidence to prove that the murder wasn’t self defense, but the police had their suspicions, causing him to be put under suspension and possibly face drug possession charge at least, since he had disposed of the narcotics that he had stolen before calling the police but it was later recovered with his fingerprints on it (although he didn’t relapse, the incident had left him too shaken up to cover up any suspicious evidence well).
He was not only facing legal charges, but was upset greatly over what had happened. Joan was the one to contact Sherlock’s father, causing him to go back to New York and try to help Sherlock.
Due to an investigation and helped by his father’s influence, Sherlock ended up getting cleared of all charges and being free to get back to work, but still decided-and was advised- to “take a break” from his work as a consultant and a detective, and started taking some psychiatric sessions.
The premiere episode opens in September, with Sherlock resuming his work, to an apparent dislike from his father, who, apparently, sees this situation as an opportunity to get Sherlock move back to London (and yes, I know that the talk about that in season two was a ploy from Mycroft).
Sherlock takes over the case that detective Bell and captain Gregson had been working on in the past, but had never solved: a young, healthy woman was found dead in her house; the cause of death hadn’t been determined, and in weeks prior to the murder she had reported a suspicious man moving around her house at night, as well as hearing weird, whistle like noises under her bedroom window. Police had investigated those claims, but hadn’t gotten very far. Shortly before her death, she had sent a text message to her sister, reading simply “A Speckled Band”.
That happened late in 2011, when Sherlock was at the height of his addiction and wasn’t working for NYPD yet, neither was that keen on studying the cases happening throughout the city. Now, almost four years later and with the anniversary of the victim’s death approaching, the victim’s sister, living in a completely different neighborhood, also reports seeing a strange man moving around her house at night and hearing whistle like noises. The suspects include their abusive stepfather, the victim’s possessive ex boyfriend and a registered female sex offender who lived close to the victim in 2011 and is now living close to the victim’s sister.
Obviously, that would be an adaption of “The Adventure Of The Speckled Band”.
I also hope that they will explore Sherlock’s bond with his father more and that we will learn more about his character, but that he will not be in the show for more than, like, first five episodes.
I know that my idea is probably crap, but I would like to hear other’s thoughts on it and other’s season four predictions. I am probably a little late for this but apparently the season four will premiere in November so…

I would like to see less clothing and more martial arts.

I think one possibility is that the NYPD will cut its ties with Holmes. He’ll still be investigating crimes but he’ll no longer have any official status to do so. It means he’ll have to work without the access to crimes scenes, evidence, and police resources he’s gotten used to.

I picture Gregson, Bell, and Watson having to officially follow these new rules while unofficially working around them as much as possible. I’m also predicting Gregson will be under a cloud this season (as was foreshadowed) so he won’t be able to offer Holmes the backing he was able to give in past seasons.

While I think this would open up interesting possibilities, it has a big liability - it’s very close to an idea that was used on Castle last season. The writers may decide to avoid claims that they’re imitating another series.

Don’t get me wrong, that would be interesting for an episode or two, but for a whole season it would get boring quite quickly in my opinion, and would go against the spirit of the show. The whole character of Sherlock Holmes, in the original and pretty much every adaptation, including this one, is examining an actual crime scene and the victim’s body, finding evidence-physical evidence-that the others would miss, whether those are the scuff marks on the floor, the smell of a deodorant on an armchair, a specific shoe missing from the closet or determining the type of the bracelet on the victim by the look of it and therefore deducing where the victim recently traveled to, that way making the reader/viewer feel invested in the investigation and understand his thought processes. If he would only use things like witness statements, news reports or even crime scene photos obtained from his secret contacts in the forensics, it would disrupt the dynamic in a way, if that were all or at least the most that he could base his investigation on- that sounds more like Hercule Poirot or Patrick Jane. And it would be unrealistic seeing him sneak his way on to the crime scene every or most of the time, even if that is Sherlock Holmes we are talking about. Not to mention, they did kind of use that plot on this very show, though only two times, in 1x13 “Red Team” and 3x1 “Enough Nemesis To Go Around”. Of course, he could still work as a private detective and therefore continue examining the crime scenes or even the body sometimes, but that would diminish Thomas’s and Marcus’s role.
On a side note, am I the only one who thinks that season three was better than season two?

Me, I want more detecting and less drama. Less Mycroft, less Joan’s problems, less Sherlock’s issues. Just good mysteries. Don’t set up artificial roadblocks that the characters have to fight around.

I admit, I’m a bit old school.

I understand what you’re saying but I think the writers could step up to the challenge. They could show it as Holmes having to step up his game. Being limited in his access to all of the evidence, he would have to work harder with what access he had. And he’d be forced to come up with new investigatory techniques to compensate.

Basically I see this as a possible way to keep the show fresh. Any show that’s been on the air for a few years runs the risk of falling into a rut. The writers on Elementary have done a good job of avoiding this by putting a hook into each season.

No. I mean, I liked Rhys Ifan’s Mycroft, but I really liked Ophelia Lovibond’s Kitty, a lot. And the storylines around Alfredo, too. Could have done without the Watson/Andrew/Gina Gershon’s drug lady storyline, though.

[li]I don’t care about Sherlock’s sobriety. Let’s abandon that as an avenue for a while can we?[/li][li]Apparently Sherlock’s mysterious Dad actually appears in the show this year. I would’ve been happy if he remained an enigmatic figure of dubious unreliable existence.[/li][li]Whatever happened to Mrs Hudson? I expected more from her, but I think she’s only appeared twice.[/li][li]The return of Kitty would be welcome, frankly. It probably won’t happen, except maybe as a one-off, but I actually liked her, even if it did unnecessarily interfere with Watson’s role in the dynamic.[/li][li]Moriarty, please. She was fantastic.[/li][/ul]

I think maybe it’s time to bust out Sherrinford Holmes, the hypothetical eldest brother of the clan. He’s pretty much a blank slate, so the show could have all kinds of interesting fun taking him in whatever unpredictable direction that it wanted to.

1I think that it adds a good dimension to Sherlock’s character and has become too large part of the show and the character to be dropped, even temporarily. They can make it turn out that he didn’t relapse after all and start featuring it less often.
2 I agree with you about dad Holmes.
3 Yes, more Ms. Hudson.
4 That would be good, but only for an episode or two.
5 I agree that there should have been more Moriarty in season three buthonestly I think that her role in 3x14 “The Female Of The Species” was brilliant, even though she was only portrayed in a letter/voice form.

Adding to my first post in this thread, maybe it will turn out that Olivia’s roommate at the rehab was closer to Olivia and Oscar than it appeared and will try to take a revenge on Sherlock? That would be a good twist.

I don’t want to see Kitty again. Ever. I could not stand her. Bring back Mycroft for a story or two, but leave Joan out of his life. Concentrate on mysteries. I am not interested in the personal lives of characters. I want to see more Alfredo, Clyde, Ms. Hudson, and Pam, the snowplow driver. They can somehow be integrated into mysteries. I hope Sherlock did not relapse but if he did I don’t want that dragged out for episode after episode. And I don’t want Moriarty back either. Toss her over the Reichenbach Falls.

I would like to see the first couple of seasons on Netflix or Hulu.

Wasn’t John Noble cast as Sherlock’s father? If that’s the case, I want him in every single episode. Other cast members are optional.

Let’s see: inexplicable hatred of Kitty. No Mycroft-Jane relationship (petty jealousy, I know). More Ms. Hudson and Clyde. More mysteries and no more Moriarty? I agree 100%!

Holy Shit! My wish was granted! Seasons 1 and 2 are on HULU!

Yeah, I binge-watched last night.

Why? Jamie is one of the best characters ever.

You and me both. A whole lot of my favorite TV shows over the years (original CSI, House, Big Bang Theory, Elementary) have suffered IMO when the writers focus more on the relationships (particularly romantic relationships) of the characters. I like my procedurals and nerd comedies to be about the procedures and nerd stuff, not about interpersonal squabblings and romantic issues.

Ditto. It seems like a show comes up, grabs our attention for a couple of seasons, then gets an entirely new writing staff who do not seem to get why we liked the show. Sometimes, it seems like the new staff has never actually seen the show!

I like the fact that Elementary always has some subplot in the episode. Without that it would be just another police procedural. But they could work on better mysteries. Though there were many original and complex cases in season three. But in season one (that is the best so far in my opinion) there was much more clues featured in the investigation and the pace of the show was faster. They would also do a better job writing the important clues to be the way that only Sherlock could notice them (I cringed when in 3x11 “The Illustrious Client” he found out about the stolen medicine by following a blood trail). It is hard to keep up the quality but at times writers show that they can still do it (3x14 “Female of the Species” and 3x22 “The Best Way Out Is Always Through” come to mind).
