Elementary: Whither Kitty?

I didn’t like Kitty when she was first introduced (which was clearly the writers’ intent) but the character has grown on me (which was also clearly the writer’s intent - well played, writers).

Which is why I now feel it’s unfortunate that that I can’t see a future for her in the series. She served a good purpose in being a divide between Holmes and Watson but that’s been resolved. She now serves as essentially a duplicate Watson with the original Watson still present. I feel the series is going to have to get past this awkward stage of Holmes and Watson working separately but together - in other words, get them back together as regular partners.

So I think the current story arc will end with Kitty’s removal from the series. She’ll either end up dead (I hope not) or returning to London (which has been hinted at). And her removal from the series will clear the way for Holmes and Watson to start working together again full time. And the writers can come up with some new story arc for next season.

Thoughts?

I loved this show the first 2 seasons. I can’t abide it now. Introducing Kitty threw off the entire rhythm of the show. Actually, the whole story of Sherlock going to London for 6 months threw off the entire rhythm. It was unnecessary and cluttered up the show. IMHO there was no reason for him to leave, therefore no reason for Kitty. She’s just fluff. The concept of Sherlock Holmes revolves around him and Watson being partners. It seems like the writers got tired of true character growth (Sherlock getting sober) and felt they needed to add something. Lazy writing.

Kitty will be resolved one way or another by the season’s end. I doubt she will be killed, and I doubt she will kill her rapist. Bell or Gregson will do that. Her character will undergo miracle development and she will go back to London as Holmes’ partner to work with Scotland Yard.

I like the show, and like some of the changes from canon (the female Watson being a good choice), but the whole point of the series is the Holmes-Watson dynamic. If you don’t want that, make a different show and call it something else - Monk, L&O CI, House - each of which are based on Holmes but different enough so that the differences don’t matter.

I didn’t care for the addition of Kitty and unfortunately, that hasn’t changed much. I find myself not paying as much attention to the show anymore. So, if she is leaving, that might improve things for me.

havent seen the latest - but my guess is she ends up dead - I can’t see her being a spin-off show, and at the end of the current arc, she’ll have faced her worst fears, etc.

If I were to guess - it will go down becuase she started investigating on her own and gets caught - and that will be the impetus to keep Watson and Holmes doing things ‘together’.

I dunno, I quite enjoy the evolution of Kitty. I mean it didn’t make too much sense to have Watson in this day and age subject to the whims of the overly demanding Sherlock. So it’s nice to have Watson pursue her own interests, while helping out on cases.

It was interesting seeing Kitty in **Guardians of the Galaxy **- the actress played the Collector’s assistant - the one who touched the stone.

As for Elementary - yep, it seems like she has run her course and they will likely close her arc…

Considering the ending of the last episode “Seed Money”, I wouldn’t say that at all. In fact, quite the opposite.

Looks like I have some DVR catching up to do!!

If you haven’t seen the most recent episode, it brought in some major story development.
Kitty was at her support group, talking about how she has adjusted to life in New York. She got involved in a case of her own for another woman at her support group.

Holmes told Watson that Kitty has learned enough that he plans on “graduating” her from being his assistant to being his partner. Watson in turn tells Holmes that she’s taking a job investigating for an insurance company and will only be working on criminal investigations on the side.

In the final scene, Gregson calls Holmes and has him meet him at a crime scene and tells him not to bring Kitty. When Holmes arrives, Gregson shows him a woman who’s been murdered. From the condition of the body, it’s clear it’s the same man who abducted Kitty in London.

So we essentially have it set up so Watson is going to step out of the picture and Kitty is going to become the new Watson. But unless Lucy Liu is leaving the series, I don’t see that happening. And as far as I know, Liu isn’t leaving. So instead I feel it’s Kitty who will leave and the appearance of her London attacker will be the means of her exiting the show.
It took me quite a while to realize I had also seen her in No Strings Attached. She played Ashton Kutcher’s ex-girlfriend who was dating his father.

That was the last episode I saw - last weeks - this weeks is apparently tonite and I am confusing my days again.

The end of that is what fully leads me to my conclusion above - as you seem to agree with - but we may disagree on the manner of her departure.

Ophelia Lovibond has been listed as a guest star in the credits all year so far, which doesn’t bode well for her character’s longevity and with the plot twist at the end of the last episode I agree it sounds like her ‘arc’ may end as soon as tonight.

This show always could use more Clyde.

And more Alfredo and Ms. Hudson

Srsly?

Like, I think that’s stretching the limits of the Holmes character, to have a crime-solving turtle.

Maybe if you make him bi-polar, maybe…

I, myself, am wondering how long Watson working for an insurance company is going to last. She “likes the people” seems a flimsy pretense. Exactly how interesting or challenging is insurance work?

I always thought Watson’s personal journey ought to be a return to practicing medicine. For someone whose calling, for a time, was helping people move beyond their moments of weakness and gain self-awareness, she always seems to have skipped those steps herself.

Kitty - blah - don’t know why they did it. I don’t hate her, but she doesn’t work in the overall story where she is. Maybe if she’d come in as Watson’s assistant? Holmes always trying to displace her might have been an interesting dynamic. The other way 'round is Not much fun.

I couldn’t tell if Kitty’s attacker was going to grab her right away, or if it’s going to arc over several episodes?

Apparently it’s about to get very interesting and challenging.

no shit sherlock…

oh - wait.

Yeah - that was good.

Watching tonight’s episode now.

I dunno - NBC got two seasons out of Banacek. I could have stood a couple more. Seemed interesting enough to me.
