Sherlock January 1 2017 "The Six Thatchers" (open spoilers)

It’s back! Well, it will be tomorrow. And three episodes this time instead of just one like last year.

Anyway, I figured we better have a discussion thread about the episode. I can’t wait!

UK people, what time does it air there?

It will be first broadcast on (free to view) BBC1 at 20:30 hours - Eighty thirty in the evening, old money.

TCMF-2L

Yay! It has been a long time.

Toby Jones will be a villain in the first one, and I’m sure he’ll be a proper rotter.

I’ve read an article that Sherlock will be something less of a dick this time around. I hope they don’t take that too far. Some of my favorite scenes have been when he has been a major dick. The restaurant/reunion scene, for example.

I have a friend on FB who was saying that there’s allusions to something groundbreaking happening? And that it’s been hinted/danced around for 120 years?? What is she talking about? I’m not super big into the fandom so I don’t really know.

This is ultra-spoilery so don’t click unless you’ve seen it

Mary dies. It’s something that I think can be inferred from the books, but wasn’t ever directly addressed

Overall though it was pretty enjoyable, but it felt stretched to 90 minutes. I felt that that was a problem last season too. Perhaps they should aim for 3 x one hour, just to tighten things up.

I…actually don’t even know what/who that spoiler is referring to. So I guess that shows my level of commitment to the show lol. But she mentioned it was something that had never been done expect in satire. So I don’t think that’s it??

The ONLY thing that I can think of, given the lady on my FB and her interests is that Sherlock is gay?? I dunno, I think maybe that kinda makes sense?

Does Ford have some kind of product placement deal with this show? Lots of shots of the Ford logo on that car.

Well, not what I expected in an episode. I’m not sure this was one of my favorites, but it was certainly interesting. It was so hyper-focused on storylines from previous seasons.

Watson can’t go on blaming Sherlock. He did try to protect Mary, at least I think he did.

Does the BBC need money to retain actors?

Well episode one done. Meh. I really think the whole super secret agent stuff has got out of hand.
.

I thought “A Mary-centric episode? Aw, that’s like getting a ‘Shemp’.”

I think the point is that Sherlocks showing off provoked the woman into shooting, and thus effectively led to Mary’s death. Mary even told him to shut up at some point during his monologue.

Overall it seemed like a whole lot of soap opera strung across a very thin plot.

Yeah, very surprising.

Getting a ‘Shemp’ ?
.

Yeah I was not a fan of this one. Sherlock was almost the secondary story!

Martin Freeman and Amanda Abbington (John and Mary) just broke up in real life after 16 years together and 2 kids. For some reason knowing this made the show awkward to watch for me.

I agree. That’s all I could think about as Freeman was sobbing.

Rumors over the past couple of years all mentioned that this might happen because it happened in the book, and the show stays pretty true to the book, so I wasn’t horribly shocked or upset.

It’s not my favorite episode, but I’m rewatching it tonight or tomorrow to see if it grows on me a bit more.

tbh I got a bit bored. Why was Mycroft’s office in a coal bunker?

To precambrianmollusc: it’s a paraphrase of a quote from Cotton Hill of “King of the Hill.” He had sat down to watch an episode of “Charlie’s Angels” and when he saw it featured Shelly Hack instead of Farrah Fawcett or Cheryl Tiegs, he said “that’s like getting a Shemp”. Meaning a Three Stooges short featuring Shemp instead of the superior Curly.

One thing I hope they end is Sherlock’s extended physical altercations with bad guys. They make him look like Neo from The Matrix. It just cheapens the character. His endless canoodling with his cell phone is also tiring.

There has been a suggestion by Moffat and Gatiss that this may be the last season, or perhaps one last hurrah after this. I think they’re tiring of their own shtick and they recognise the whole concept is starting to wear thin. Based on this episode, I would tend to agree.
