Gregson already knows it was Kitty (which will be confirmed as soon as Gruner wakes up) and he gave Holmes the warning that she would be arrested. Gregson apparently decided he won’t look the other way but he won’t go to extraordinary lengths to find her. Kitty’s already relocated and changed her name once. If she does so again and the police aren’t actively looking for her, she’ll get away. Gruner’s abduction and disfigurement will remain an open case and there will be an open arrest warrant out for Kitty Winter in New York.
Yes, I know he does. So do Sherlock and Watson, and the audience is also supposed to assume she did. But did she really? Playing with audience assumptions is the kind of twist that happens a lot in shows like this.
If Kitty didn’t do it, who did? Sherlock? He’s the only other reasonable possibility, but he isn’t acting at all like he did it. Who else would have known Gruner was there, known Kitty had the nutmeg stuff, and had a reason to disfigure him?
That’s what makes it a twist. He did it to himself to discredit Kitty further!
Well, probably not, but it just felt to me like there was something left hanging.
Kitty did say something like “I’m going to take away your mask” to Gruner right at the end. Which I took to mean “You won’t be able to hide behind your handsome face and smile anymore”, so I’m personally convinced she did it.
I agree. Network television isn’t going to go full torture porn and show somebody pouring acid on another person’s face. So they showed us the before and after scenes so we’d know what happened without actually seeing it.
Yes; you’ve explained it well. It’s not that we’re supposed to be wondering whether or not Kitty did it; it’s that she did do it, but they weren’t going to show it-- instead giving us the before-and-after confirmation of what had taken place.
I suppose there’s a tiny area of Plausible Deniability for those who would prefer to believe that she didn’t do it. (Similarly, perhaps, to the coyness with which we were shown that (this will be a spoiler for Breaking Bad: )
Walter White really did poison the son of Jesse’s girlfriend. He used a non-lethal plant extract rather than the ricin that figured in the storyline, but he did poison the kid. We weren’t shown that directly, but instead were given before-and-after scenes that indicated what had happened. Therefore those who were invested in Walt as their Hero were able to entertain doubts that he had poisoned the kid at all, while most viewers, less into identifying with Walt, were able to accept that he had done the deed.
Whereas, for me, her lisp would cause me to lose function in my knees.
Wow, this may be the most ridiculous thing I’ve read on SDMB today, and that’s saying something. Your supposition is wrong on both accounts. Kitty is quite attractive, and her appearance has little to do with why anybody thinks she adds or detracts from the show.
I enjoyed the Kitty storyline, but thought they would allow it to progress and resolve over the full season. Perhaps they still will, though I don’t see how. Watson going to work at an insurance company was silly. The job offer to keep her close and use her to spy was interesting, though it seems out of character for her to actually go to work there.
I meant to post this the other day - I was very happy with the way they conclded the arc - the flashbacks to London really helped.
I actually hope they leave it that Kitty disfigured the guy, and not bring up some “super-villain” type character that did it for her (or to frame her). (And that she disfigured more than his face, ifyouknowwhatImean  )
Not that I approve of vigilante justice, but if the show is going there, they should really go there and not tease the audience. Holmes almost killed a guy as well, and it nearly cost him what few friends he had. And since he didn’t ultimately do it, he can still be considered the good guy. Maybe I (or a lot of the viewing audience) would have done what Kitty did in similar circumstances, but that doesn’t mean it would be the right thing to do.
I’m old-school enough that I want my TV heroes to be moral. Let the audience entertain their own revenge fantasies, but have the heroes do the right thing.
I should not have used the word nobody, because people might still complain if she were prettier.
When someone says “Allow me to be honest”, it is obviously a personal observation, because it is difficult to be honest on behalf of anyone else. I think Kitty is exceptionally unattractive to the point of me having to force myself not to turn off the show. And I found out that 6 out of 9 people I asked think that she is very unattractive. 3 think she is very pretty, but what do they know.
It is quite possible that the actress is just doing a very good job, as her publicity photos are certainly more attractive, partly because she is allowed to smile in them.
While we certainly disagree on how pretty she is, I don’t understand why it’s such a huge deal for you. Even if we agree for the sake of argument that she’s unattractive, so what? Why does that make you want to turn the show off? That speaks a lot more about you than her, and makes you look shallow and superficial.
Yeah, I don’t get it. Why does every woman on television have to be attractive? I prefer the British model, where a lot of the women just look like women (as a lot of the men just look like men) and they’re only specifically “attractive” when the script calls for it.
FWIW, I think Kitty is fine–a little weird looking, but fine. But then, I think the same thing of Joan, and Sherlock for that matter. Respectively, I think they look like a chipmunk, a horse, and Grumpy Cat :D. All of them are odd-looking IMO, but they work in their roles.
Well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, certainly, but I can’t imagine most people think this woman - either the actress or the character Kitty - is "exceptionally unattractive. https://www.google.com/search?q=Ophelia+Lovibond&safe=off&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=zAXRVKrLHoanggSg44H4CA&ved=0CAgQ_AUoAQ&biw=1211&bih=907#imgdii=_
I would rate her as well above average in terms of attractiveness/prettiness. Your opinion is noted, though, and I can’t determine who you find attractive.
Kitty is unattractive in the same sense that Kate Winslet was overweight in Titanic.
