That’s because genre fiction pretty much by definition isn’t going to be great literature. When it *is *really good, we handwave away the normal genre description. Thus, you get something like Rushdie’s *Midnight’s Children *being described as “magic realism” instead of “urban fantasy” or “contemporary fantasy.”
