Elseworlds: CW Arrowverse crossover event 2018

Two more trailers. The second gives us our first glimpse of Batwoman in action.

Tonight’s episode of Supergirl had a teaser consisting of what I believe to be the first minute or so of the crossover: DCTV Elseworlds Crossover Teaser - The Flash & The Monitor on Earth-90 (HD) - YouTube
It’s chockablock full of easter eggs, including the music.

The previously posted teaser was appended to all three shows included in the crossover, the first time they’ve ever done that. A nice touch was that the subtitle “Earth-90” was in a font appropriate to each show. Supergirl had a futuristic sans-serif font, as shown in the video link. Arrow had a very square Trajan-like font. The Flash showed an italic sans-serif font. According to rumor, the teaser will not be in the actual crossover (possibly cut for time).

Without further ado, here’s the trailer and episode summaries.

Elseworlds, Part 1

EPIC ELSEWORLDS CROSSOVER KICKS OFF TONIGHTWhen Barry Allen and Oliver Queen wake up one morning and realize they have swapped bodies with each other, the two set off to find out what disturbed the timeline to cause such a shift. However, things quickly go from bad to worse when they present their case to Team Flash and the gang doesn’t believe them. Barry and Oliver realize they need Supergirl’s help and travel to Smallville on Earth-38 where they end up meeting Kara’s cousin, Clark Kent (guest star Tyler Hoechlin), and intrepid reporter, Lois Lane (guest star Elizabeth Tulloch).
Elseworlds, Part 2

THE ELSEWORLDS CROSSOVER CONTINUES IN GOTHAM CITY WITH BATWOMANWith Oliver and Barry still stuck in the other’s bodies, the two get a lead on John Deegan (guest star Jeremy Davies) and head to Gotham City with Supergirl to figure out why their reality has changed. While there, they meet the mysterious Kate Kane (guest star Ruby Rose) who provides them with information that leads the group to Arkham Asylum.
Elseworlds, Part 3

THE BATTLE CONCLUDESSupergirl, The Flash, Green Arrow and Superman engage in the battle of their lives.

Huh, Mrs. Grimm is playing Lois Lane. I had to look it up but she was definitely familiar.

Just watched the first “episode”:

Fun!

But then I’m a sucker for any amnesia, time travel, cross dimensional or “I just woke up in someone else’s life!” storyline. And, like most CW superhero fare, I didn’t have to think too much.

I hope that’s not the end of Superman. And where were the Legends? I haven’t read the thread previous to today’s post-airing posts or any more than article headlines leading into the crossover. Any reason they were left out?

Quantum Leap reference!

An amazing (should I say, A.M.A.Z.O.-ing) start to the crossover. Some great meta-commentary on the shows, from hallway talks to Team Flash/Felicity yammering in their ears all the time.

I can’t believe they just blatantly used, not just the Smallville farm, but the Smallville theme song. The rest of the music was on-point as well - the tip of the hat to the 1990 Flash theme (by Danny Elfman, no less), the comic version of the Arrow theme when [del]Barry[/del]Oliver woke up, the seamless blending of the Flash and Green Arrow themes, the Batwoman theme.

Stephen Amell can do comedy, whodathunkit? Too bad he has to act so grumpy all the time on Arrow. Half his talents are just wasted on that show.

“Are you puffing out your chest?”
“…Yes”

Legends aren’t part of the crossover this year, they’ve got their own reality-bending problems. The stated reason by the producers was to give more time for the Big Three to interact with each other. Also, I think everyone was exhausted by the punishing shooting schedule from last year.

As somebody who doesn’t watch Arrow, what’s up with the ‘you have failed this city’ thing? [del]Ollie[/del]Oliver says it in his first fight as Flash, and Barry says it when he finally gets all Arrowy, so I gather it’s Oliver’s catch phrase, but it doesn’t seem to make sense in either context where it’s used in this episode.

Obviously there’s more to this, and more will be spelled out tonight.

But it’s hilarious to think that the wild-eyed guy ranting about his grand plans for the world got the power to rewrite reality itself, and — used it to make two heroes swap roles, with both of them still perfectly capable of getting the job done. As if that’s all he wanted, and nothing else besides.

You just have to imagine him looking into that book and chortling “I will use this new power to make a crossover that should never be made! The mightiest heroes will be made… awkward! And I will become… mildly amused!!! Bwahhhhaha!”

Rule of Funny: Oliver couldn’t figure out what do as the Flash, so reverted to his old catch phrase.
Rule of Awesome: Barry really is the Green Arrow, so used his catch phrase while taking down A.M.A.Z.O.

For my money, though, the funniest-awesomest moment was when Kara growled, “I am the Green Arrow.”

Bad phrasing on my part, really.

I’m not questioning why it was used in the episode, despite the way I wrote my last sentence - that part I get, I’m just not grokking how it’s his catch phrase. It just seems a very situational line, not one he’d use every time he fought a bad guy, which is how it’s being used here.

If he’s taking out corrupt officials in Star City, the line works. Taking down a more misguided vigilante? Also works. But some gangsters? No. I can…sort of buy it for AMAZO, given why he was built, but even there it seems weird…seems like he was probably never unveiled for a reason, and I’m not sure they actually told Barry and Oliver that part.

Still not quite sure I get AMAZO - I get copying Meta powers (meta data uploaded - heh) - but Neither Kara nor Kal (nor Ms Frost) are MetaHumans.

Nor is Arrow. But Amazo, and his Marvel counterpart, Super-Adaptoid, copy abilities too.

I don’t think he’s used it much, if at all, recently. But he used it almost every time he executed a major baddie through Season 1, and kept it up sporadically for a while.
(It really got silly after a while, which is why bringing it back was fun – for people who watched Arrow.)
EDIT: It made sense during early seasons because to over-simplify, he was carrying out his dad’s plan to thwart the corruption rampant in Star(ling) City by its rich and powerful leaders. He finished that a while ago.

Lots of fun stuff tonight, but my favorites were

Barry Allen from Earth-(19)90
The bust of Shakespeare!

The best one for me was “M. Guggenheim” locked up in Arkham Asylum.

[del]Oliver[/del]Barry and Felicity still had more chemistry in their brief moment together than [del]Barry[/del]Oliver and Felicity had during the entire run of Arrow.

ETA: And I’m bummed that Kate Kane/Batwoman is on Earth-1 rather than Earth-38 as I thought. She and Kara looked like they could work well together. Did you see how they both immediately sussed out each other’s identity? Plus there’s confirmation that Batman is indeed a thing on Earth-38.

Had to look that one up Marc Guggenheim - Wikipedia

Did also like the references to Victor Fries and Scarecrow.
