Periods aren’t fun?
Allow me to translate…
Okay now its ready to go to IMHO
No no no, bad lieu. This is just to devolve into another jarbaby gets girly (in a bad way) thread or maybe even an OpalCat Discharge thread. I’ve had enough of those recently.
As to the OP, give Elton (see, caps are fun too!) a break. The guy’s old, he getting Robert Downey Jr. to do his videos for him, fer cripes sake.
And did you hear? No more CDs. Of course, I remember the first of his many farewell tours back in the mid-80s.
I think it’s called mellowing with age. Sir Elton isn’t the only one to go through the transition. In fact, IMHO Aerosmith and the Stones are more the exception than the rule. Look at Stevie Wonder, Van Morrison, Elvis Costello, Eric Clapton, etc. With the exception of an occational rocker, most of these performers have slowed their pace, with mixed results.
As for Elton, I wrote him off after “Rock of the Westies”, when someone said I should check out his latest “Songs from the West Coast”. It’s definitely more in keeping with his earlier work (ie. “Madman Across the Water” era).
Aaah, many thanks you men 'o pause so that we may reflect.
My WAG, funguy, would be that Elton’s decline in quality and productivity would be based on two things.
First, artists often go through a window of productivity, which often seems to peak in their earlier, more formative years. If anything, Elton’s genius and quality of output seemed to be extremely long-lived. The guy has has a phenomenal career and while it’s a shame his recent works pale in comparison to those he churned out as a younger guy, he can’t be expected to keep that pace his entire life. Remember, he burned his candle at both ends.
Secondly, and this kinda goes along with the first point, Elton’s inspiration has morphed since his lean years. He’s no longer the youth looking for a hit or out to make a name for himself. He’s been on the absolute pinnacle. The hunger that may have been present before would have undoubtably been in large part satiated by now.
Again, just a wag.
It is good that lieu listens to what the men says.
Maybe Elton’s got one of those Samson complexes going. Now that he’s stopped with the hair transplants, maybe his musical strength is dwindling. Of course it’s that Taupin fellow that comes up with the lyrics, so maybe we should be asking what’s wrong with Bernie?
Elton is definitely a temperamental soul. As an Elton fan, the documentary “Tantrums and Tiaras” really opened my eyes on how much of a spoiled little brat he is. However if I were as rich and famous as Elton is, I would probably be a spoiled brat too.
I don’t quite understand his frustration with the record industry through. Being as rich and famous as he is I am sure he could do a “George Lucas” and fund his own recordings and make even more money. I also thought he had a really good friendship with the man who owns Geffen Records.
