Elvis' Coffin at the Seafood Shack

OK. I was 5 when Elvis offered his spirit up to Heaven and my memory of the national period of mourning is hazy. My friend Dave - same age - has a very peculiar ability to remember certain kinds of things with uncanny accuracy, but he’s also a bit of a nut. Does anyone remember seeing, in a bar or arcade or anywhere else, a display of an Elvis mannequin in a coffin? He says he saw more than one. At least one was in a seedy seafood place in Panama City Beach, Florida. I’ve never heard of any such thing. He says it was just as creepy as it sounds. Had a plexiglass cover or something and he doesn’t remember it having anything with it like a coin slot or beer logo…

If he’s right, the late 70’s were a lot scarier than I remember.

I thought I’d give ya’ll something nice for my 50th post.

It wasn’t a mannequin.

Are you a turtle?

The late '70s were only scary if you didn’t like pina coladas

Could be that supporters of the ‘conspiracy’ theory of his death are stating their support that Elvis is still alive. Check out the below link that states “in the years leading up to 1977, Elvis was working as a secret government agent in an investigation of the Mafia – and he had to go underground in a hurry, with the assistance of the government, to protect himself and his family. This charade was so elaborate, and so thorough, that a wax replica of Elvis was placed in his coffin to fool mourners – not to mention the National Enquirer. The wax Elvis was kept from melting in the Tennessee summer heat by a covert air conditioning unit, which was why the pallbearers seemed to labor under the weight of the coffin.”

It wouldn’t be that far of a leap that people would mock these rumors or for that matter bring attention to their theory by putting up these fake coffins with wax Elvis’s in them.

Viva Elvis

Well, I did look at that site and another one for the National Funeral Museum or something in houston that has a mannequin in a coffin. I know it seems like this goes a good way toward an answer, but my impression about what my friend is telling me is that these ‘displays’ were very matter-of-fact and unremarkable except for what they were. I will accept that, as a young boy, the ‘impression’ in his mind could have been quite different than the impression such an artifact was intended to inspire, but the whole idea is just so odd. I’m really hoping to find somebody who remembers seeing these things just sitting around.
