ElvisL1ves Speaks From the Ass

In this thread, http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=274416

ElvisL1ves strenuously makes the claim that Barbara Bush made the following statement on Good Morning America on March 18, 2003.

Curiously, though, when pressed for a cite, he, and others, have only been able to provide liberal websites, message boards, and blogs, rather than actual news sites. Now, a quote like this, on the eve of war, by the former First Lady and mother of the current President, surely would have been newsworthy.

So where is the contemporaneous, primary news source, that shows that Mrs. Bush ever uttered this remark?

Saying “I read it on the internet, so it must be true” doesn’t cut it. In other words, prove it or shut the fuck up.

You were already given the links, buttmunch. The fact that you’re not worth the price of the transcripts.tv original directly is no one else’s fault but yours.

If those mean ol’ lib’ruls were intent on making shit up about Barbara, wouldn’t it be something a little better than this?

I don’t think that there’s any doubt she said it. But that the quote has been lifted out of context. She was talking about the TV media’s love of endless, groundless supposition. That is what is “irrelevant”.

I don’t think that even Barbera Bush is that stupid to say something so obviously heartless.

“He sits and listens and I read books because I know perfectly well that - don’t take offense - that 90 percent of what I hear on television is supposition, when we’re talking about the news. And he’s not, not as understanding of my pettiness about that. But why should we hear about body bags and deaths and how many, what day it’s going to happen, and how many this or what do you suppose? Oh, I mean, it’s, not relevant. So why should I waste my beautiful mind on something like that? And watch him suffer.”

Bullshit. You have not given a singular solitary cite to back up your allegation. Not one. I know this wasn’t in Great Debates, but c’mon. If she made the “beautiful mind” comment, it would have been newsworthy at the time. But all you can come up with is “I read it on the internet, so it must be true.”

Provide one cite. Or shut up.

Some people wonder why I’ve been staying away from political threads on this message board…

milroyj: Are you planning on repeating over and over, in two separate threads, that Elvis refuses to give you a cite, no matter how many times it is explained to you?

I’ve heard that she’s the ringleader of an international gang of morphine smugglers, white slavers, and flamenco dancers. As I am shocked by this accusation, I’m looking forward to hearing Babs deny it on national television. I just don’t know WHAT to believe anymore.

I made a good-faith effort to find a respectable source for the cite, or better yet, a video clip. Nada. Survey says…BULLSHIT. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof, and no proof is being provided.

Your post (#10) in this thread certainly contains a false quote, and that was just yesterday.

Not that this is a stamp of certification but Frank Rich of the NYT takes it as gospel here, and even if you don’t like Rich, it’s unlikely he’d be spouting about it without some degree of certainty that it happened.

Here’s the entire section surrounding that quote to put it in context

But interestingly it is not mentioned in the linked ABC interview synopsis page

I don’t imagine (just on a common sense practical level) that the site would be offering a link for you to purchase the entire interview (for $ 30.00!) if the quote was not contained within it.

I opened another thread, at Elvis’s invitation, to end the hijack of the previous one. If that was the wrong thing to do, I apologize.

Elvis refuses to provide a cite, as is customary at the SDMB, even in the Pit. So that’s what I am calling him out on. If he is unwilling or unable to provide one, then he should shut up about it, in my opinion.

I wanted a cite, by the way, because it was obvious that the quote, if true, was being taken out of context, as Futile Gesture indicates above. But if taking quotes out of context, (and then refusing to provide the context in which the quote was made) to slam political opponents is acceptable behavior, that’s news to me. Thanks for the explanation.

I don’t have a dog in this fight politically, but per the section of the interview I really don’t understand why some people are having problems believing she would have said this. It’s not a particularly shocking statement in context or content for an old dowager of her patrician background and personality to make.

In essence she’s saying “Why should I get immersed in something that’s mainly speculative, that I can’t do anything about, and that only upsets me when I watch my husband get upset by it?”

interesting. I would concur that if some one refused or failed to provide cites for a claim they should indeed shut the fuck up about it.

Several respectable cites have already been provided for this rather unremarkable claim. Do you not know how to read?

If you’re calling me a liar, say so. If you think I might have been honestly mistaken, then say so. If you want to be a sniveling coward, making insinuations without the integrity to back them up, then you’ve just done that. Which is it, boychik?
Debate topic: Is this the silliest pitting in SDMB history, or only since milroyj joined?

I simply stated a fact: You posted a false quote. It’s up to you to apologize (which you haven’t done yet) and explain why you did it. I don’t know if it was an honest or dishonest mistake. When you man up and apologize, you can tell us.

I find it odd that this threads purpose is to “Pit” the first person to attempt to give milroyj a cite and then demands that someone give him a different cite.

OK, folks, here it is.

The following quotation is from the ABC News transcript for March 18, 2003.

I cannot provide a link, because i located this transcript on Lexis/Nexis, which is an expensive, subscription-only news database. Most public libraries and nearly all university libraries have access to this, so if you want to check it for yourself, please go to one of those locations. In the meantime, i like to think that, even if you don’t agree with my politics, you’ll trust me to quote the piece accurately:

Hope that clears things up.

milroyj, you are just flat out sad.

My greatest regret is that our next president will be elected by people as stubbornly and willfully stupid and uninformed as milroyj. Cites have been provided repeatedly and because he is too cheap to pay for The Real Thing and too partisan to accept anything less he will continue to harp on this until some other shiny object attracts his attention.

Give it up, milroyj. You’ve already proven yourself an obnoxious moron who is unwilling to accept anything but your preconceptions. No need to burden the hamsters countersinking the point.
