My parent’s died a couple of years ago and we have sold their house in South Africa so now I have a little capital of my own which I am going to use to build a house here in Antigua. Of course building costs here are exhorbitant and the money from the house in SA will not even come close to touching what we need so we have to borrow money. We went to look at a piece of land yesterday and we’re going to buy it! It even has a sea view, which is a BIG bonus and the price, for the area, is a steal. It’s 1/2 acre, so a fairly big piece of property. The only problem is that the house that we can afford to put up on it will be pretty small in comparison. But hey, we have a sea view!!!
I am so excited and scared at the same time. I have the offer papers right next to me on my desk as we speak. I am just waiting for a property evaluation tomorrow and once he says it’s good value (which I know it is), I am going to go put down a non-refundable 10% deposit. I am hoping they can start building by April and have the house finished by October (which is when the wedding is). I was thinking that we may even be able to have the wedding there, but that’s doubtful as it will not be landscaped yet. They cannot landscape until they’ve finished building and that’s going to take about 5 months.
This is so much money! It was nice to have the money in the bank and know that I had a financial cushion. Once we pay the deposit to the bank on the mortgage, that’s mostly going to be gone. I know it’s the right thing to do but it’s just such a huge responsibility. And now I have to be a grown up! Aaaaarrrggghhhh!
