Embarrassed Tech: IE Won't Forward

This is kind of embarrassing to ask since I am a computer geek, but I have a windows problem that won’t go away. When I visit sites like hotmail or dell with internet explorer (XP Pro, IE 6, all fully patched) shortly after I log in I get redirected. At that point the browser simply stops. I get no errors, no codes, just a blank screen sometimes with “redirecting” at the top in plain text. It never redirects. If I open Opera it works fine. I’ve tried a number of different things from security settings to updates to very broad google searches with no good results. Does anyone else have this problem?

Have you tried checking if it’s spyware?

Does IE show where it’s trying to redirect to?
Sometimes it shows up on the status bar at the bottom of IE window for a brief moment…

I 2nd the check for Spyware. Use Spybot Search & Destroy and AdAware. There are others that also do a decent job.

In your security settings have you disabled “META REFRESH”? As I remember there’s a custom option for it, and if you’ve been playing around with it, or possibly have selected High security for the internet zone, then this could be the cause.

Thanks for the tips guys. No, its not spyware. I am extremely anal about spyware and have a suite of tools to deal with it. Actually I spend a good part of some days removing it from other PC’s around the office.

I checked the meta setting, it was turned off! Guess what? That was it! How did you know to think of that? Seriously, this has plagued me for months. Thanks so much for the info, definately did the job for me.
