I can understand not knowing the “Cork”, but how have you not heard those songs? Never exposed to radio, or TV, or concerts? I’m really curious. It would seem that you might hear them accidentally, even if you studiously avoid them.
It’s nearly impossible that he or she really hasn’t ever heard these songs, if only on accident. Stairway, though more popular, is actually the more likely candidate because Led Zeppelin doesn’t license anything. Freebird, on the other hand, has been in virtually every tv show, movie, and commercial ever created. Ever.
I haven’t heard it, either; I only know it exists because I’ve read about it here on the SDMB.
It’s really disappointing to learn that there’s a second Fergie.
I know precisely what you mean. These threads pop up every few months (or even more commonly), and while I suspect that most individual people posting in them honestly aren’t trying to be too-cool-for-school about it, that’s always the vibe I get from the thread as a whole… particularly when people start using phrasings like “I must be the only person under 30 who hasn’t done X” (no you’re not) or “I’m sure I’ll be flamed beyond belief for this, but I’ve never seen…” (no you won’t).
On the other hand, I admit that this is just a pet peeve of mine and no reason to dump on a thread that other people are enjoying.
No, this still isn’t that thread.
Sorry, guy, but it’s beginning to look a little sad. You’ve spent the past year and a half looking for the how-great-are-we;-we’re-all-too-good-for-pop-culture thread, and you only ever post to ask if you’ve finally found it. Come out into the rest of the message board, it’ll be fun!
kidding.
Not one episode of Seinfeld. (SP?)
Nor of Friends.
I know nothing of American Idol, nor of Survivor.
I liked the Buffy movie and feel fairly certain I’d enjoy the show, but I didn’t catch it when it was first on, and I am just too busy/lazy to Netflix it. I hate it that I don’t get any of the references
I’ve never eaten a McDonalds hamburger. Does that count? Obviously I know they exist, and I’ve had their fries and Filet-O-Fish and whatnot, but I spent most of the first half of my life a vegetarian and after that it just never sounded appetizing.
I did have my first, and only, White Castle burger last summer. It was…unremarkable.
McDonald’s burgers are bigger and drier (less greasy), and have ketchup and pickles on them, in addition to mustard and onions. They’re actually pretty good after a hard workout, for some reason. Other than that occasionally, it’s not something I’d normally eat.
Glad to help out. Behold!

She’s above-average looking but I don’t get the McPheever. She’s not even top 20 when it comes to celebrities and celebrities have nothing on girls you know in real life (at least for me.)
I hear yah.
Star Wars and Star Trek - never seen any of them, couldn’t give a shit about any of them, constantly amazed by otherwise mature adults who obsess about some 30-year-old sci-fi flick.
Futurama - never seen it. Seems to be a geekier version of The Simpsons. No ta.
Big Brother - OK, I watched some of the first series. Since then I have made a point of avoiding it. What could have been an interesting sociological experiment was instead sacrificed to lowest-common-denominator wannabe celebs. From what I heard of the latest series, the entire house combined was still several IQ points short of a moron.
Seinfeld - don’t know anything about this at all.
The Matrix - I think I half-watched the first film at some point when my housemate had it on DVD. Wan’t paying attention, couldn’t get into it and the whole cult-like aura around it leaves me mystified.
Re texting - the people that don’t it mystify me. If you just want to give someone some info or ask a quick question, why the hell would you want to butt into their day with a voice call that has to be RING RING ANSWERED RIGHT NOW RING RING RING??? A text is so much less intrusive and you don’t end up in a dull conversation for half an hour.
Fight Club - never read it, never seen it, read the synopsis on Wikipedia and it doesn’t sound appealing at all.
Possibly not “pop culture”, but the whole RPG culture that seems so prevalent on the SDMB. Couldn’t care less if I tried.
Ditto manga/anime, whatever the difference between those two is. Cartoons for middle-aged Japanese men to jerk off to. Zero interest.
Oh right, so this thread was meant to be about stuff that passed us by by accident? Sorry.
I hope you’re joking, because they’re a little more diverse than that . . .
I have seen these before (they come up regularly on the SDMB) and you always end up with a handful of folks that glory in their rejection of mainstream stuff.
Example: the Loaded Dog up there said
Which smacks of John Hughes Syndrome.
This one has actually gone pretty well so far, for the most part.
My bit:
Several TV shows, due to my schedule, I have missed. If it started in the last 2 years, and plays in the evening, I missed it.
No pride in ignorance here. I have 2 children with a 7 year gap between them, and an assload of family obligations which for me has translated into not being knowledgeable about any damn thing going on in the world.
Hell, I might really enjoy some of the stuff I don’t get to see or do. For all I know, I might love American Idol, Dancing with the Stars or Lost, but I’ll never know. I could be a total text junkie, but I remain blissfully unaware because I just can’t muster the time and/or energy to mess with it.
I would love to watch an episode of Pushing Up Daisies, because it sounds like something I would enjoy, but haven’t seen a single episode because it’s on during my youngest child’s bath time or during dinner cleanup, or when I have Grandma care duty (I don’t know what time it’s on at all, dangit).
In short, (yeah, I know, too late) I’ve missed most all pop-culture stuff, not because I’m too cool for, but because I’m not cool enough.
P.S. Surprisingly, to me anyway, I can sing the SpongeBob song in it’s entirety. And I’m good at it!
I didn’t know there was a first one until I was buying a shirt at the Disney store and asked if I wanted to pre-buy a copy of the second…
Are you guys referring to bubble tea? That’s tapioca. Or these other ones (I forget what they are called offhand though if you’re really curious I’m sure I can get the name) that are made of coconut and flavoured in some way. At the bubble tea place by my house you can ask them to leave them out if you don’t want them (though I never do).
I’m such a nerd I can sing the Spanish version.
¿Estan listos, chicos?
¡Si, capitan, estamos listos!
¡No los esCUUUcho!
I just remembered something else. I didn’t think of it since it has passed me by. Just about all of pop/top 40 music for the last 15 years or so. I still hear some new music as long as its on modern rock(or whatever they are calling it) stations. Regular top 40 music I just never hear. I have always been a rock/blues guy so I never listened to top 40 music but I was at least exposed to it when I was younger. I would have at least some knowledge of the artists in the top ten. Now when I happen to see a list of the top songs there is a good chance that I haven’t even heard of them.
