As I mentioned in the text you quoted, my daughter pushed me to watch more, and I watched portions of two or three other episodes. If I saw the only episodes out of the 174 with juvenile potty humor and first-graders mouthing off to the adults, then I’m sure I misjudged the show.
I’m an open-minded guy, though. If you tell me what the best episode of all time is, I’ll watch it all the way through.
My job as an audience member is to be entertained. If they can keep me entertained and feed me a moral, cool. But I don’t just don’t find little kids swearing and making poop jokes entertaining, and I’m not sure how long I have to watch until the show moves beyond that and makes a point.
Oh, that reminds me of a good one. I went to The Old Spaghetti Factory downtown with my wife and her grandparents a few months back. I had to squeeze into my seat past a guy, and we were almost shoulder-to-shoulder once I sat down, due to the way the tables were arranged. I soon noticed my wife and her grandfather all googly-eyed, whipsering to each other. After some prodding, they quietly told me it was Amarie Stoudamire, star player for the local basketball team. I had heard his name before, but had NO clue what he looked like.
Wha? I’ve never seen ST:TNG, and I had no idea it was anything like that. Can you elaborate?
Watch the movie. If that doesn’t convert you then South Park is just not your cup of tea.
Pop culture ended for me around 1990. Anything after that is pretty much off my radar. I only know of American Idol because it’s sometimes on the TV at the sushi bar.
So is this the thread were we all pat each other on the backs for “being above it all”?
If so then I missed out on the pretentious hipster movement of the late 90’s and '00s and I don’t get a thrill of out telling people what shows or movies I bravely didn’t watch, bands I courageously avoided listening to, or what new technology I am raging against.
No, this is the thread where we shamefully admit how we haven’t been able to keep up with the times and have missed various chunks of what most of the rest of society is doing.
But thanks for coming, please sign the threadshitting guestbook over there on the table on your way out, while you’re not letting the door hit your ass.
The only person I recall in this thread who seemed to think they were above something in pop culture was the person who said they had outgrown South Park style humor. The rest of us are just admitting that we know zero about some of the biggest pop culture stuff out there.
Oh I am sure you didn’t want it turn out the way it has, but these threads always devolve into “I’ve never seen that crap “X” that the unclean masses seem to enjoy”.
Due to my work schedule I seem to watch less and less TV. Watch I do watch is usually what I remembered to DVR. The only show I make sure I don’t miss is Lost (oh and the newest season of Doctor Who, and Burn Notice when it comes back) though there are plenty of shows I will watch if they are on when I happen to be watching.
I don’t think anything has “passed me by” it is too easy to know about these things by glancing on the internet. Even though I don’t like reality TV I know way too much about it without even trying. The closest thing to that would probably be Harry Potter. I’ve always meant to pick up the books but never have. I’ve seen the movies and enjoyed them.
Hm. I must’ve missed the post in this thread where it devolved into that, because I haven’t seen it here. Maybe this is the thread where we predict the future?
Yeah, no, I can see where Chingon is coming from. At the very least, there’s a fair amount of:
… which isn’t so much “How did I miss that?” as “Why would anyone use/watch anything that dumb?”
Anyhoo, for me it’s the recent crop of 'tween entertainment. Not that I’m in the target demographic or anything, but it was semi-surprising to have stuff like High School Musical, Hannah Montanna, and the Jonas Brothers turn into multi-million dollar empires before I even knew what they were.
Oh, I didn’t mean to imply I’m “above” South Park. I just happen to be older than their target demographic. I’m not better than Cisco just because I prefer Jay Leno to Cartman. I know a lot of older folks that still like potty humor and cussing six-year-olds. I’m just not one of them.
Yeah, I was surprised myself when radio personalities started talking about some David Cook sighting, or some huge party being thrown in his honor; in fact, I think there’s another viewing party tonight at or near Union Station. (Maybe, I dunno.) Anyway, not having seen anything but a clip or two from American Idol in the past, I had no idea who he was.
Sorry, didn’t mean to attach motives to you that didn’t exist. How about I make up for it by having you over for a South Park marathon…I have a bunch of the DVD’s.
I don’t see myself as patting myself on the bat for my lack of sports knowledge. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with liking sports; I just don’t myself.
I watched a little of American Idol when the lovely and talented Katherine McPhee was a competitor, but not since. I don’t have a cellphone and have no desire to get one. I’ve never seen any of the Godfather movies from start to finish, and am in no hurry to do so. Not out of any sense of superiority, just that these things don’t interest me.
I’ve never watched Idol either, and am so lazy I won’t even google McPhee to see if she is, in fact, a cutie, so I won’t chime in on any of those. I was a very late adoptor (just over a year ago, I reckon) and it makes life so much easier. Just leave it off when you don’t use it, or make sure your friends & family know the best way to contact you is to leave a voice mail.
Well, even if they aren’t really “snot balls,” why can’t they just leave them out? I guess it’s a Korean thing. I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone actually consume them.
