How many damned leaders do these bad guys have? Every time I look around another leader has been snuffed somewhere or the other and I can’t see that it makes any damn difference at all. New leaders pop up like sharks teeth.
Well, duh…turnover is pretty high.
So it is decided. The Somali government is more effective than the Pakistani government.
Wrong way of looking at it. The Pakistani government is quite effective at doing what it wants to do, which is to shelter Bin Laden and keep him safe from the US. At that, they succeeded for many years. And I am sure that if they had wanted to catch Bin Laden and give him to us, they would have done it.
I have no idea how these types of international rewards work, but in the U.S. I’m pretty sure that police and other LEOs aren’t eligible to collect such rewards, since it’s their job to catch the bad guys. So, I wonder if the Somali soldier is gonna get paid.
From the AP account I saw today, the Somalis did not even know who he was when they killed him. They had to dig him back up and compare his face to pictures to confirm it after they found a huge cache of money and operational materials in his effects.
I find it curious that the government of Somalia had no qualms about how his body was treated while the US tried at every turn to treat Bin Laden’s corpse with Islamic customs.
Well Somalis have pirates, sorta like the Japanese have ninjas, they are bound to become a world power. This is just the first step.
We should pay. Folks in the Mountains of Afghanistan already don’t believe we will ever pay a bounty. Pay the Somali and then start putting bounties on the heads of Somali warlords. These guys will stare down the barrel of an aircraft carrier for a few million bucks. I bet a credible bounty could make a difference in that part of the world.
dude…I want that shirt
Bingo. No way the Pakis didn’t know he was there. I imagine the US knew he was there for quite a while too, but the Pakis weren’t going to give him up. Pakistan must be getting a shitload of money from the US to pretend they want us to do well in the war on terror.
I don’t mind a wrong turn now and then. Luck is a great thing to have on your side.
Gunsights? We don’t need no stinkin’ gunsights!
An American official said that the United States identified Mr. Mohammed’s body through DNA analysis. The official would not say what DNA the United States used to compare with the body’s.
They did the same for OBL. But won’t say what they used for this comparison? Why?
Doesn’t it have to be some tissue of his body, saliva, hair whatever that is needed to do a test? How did they get that for Osama and then for this guy too?
Osama’s was compared to that of his family members. The bin Ladin’s are a very large family, and several of them are pretty hostile to their famous relation and gave samples to the US gov’t shortly after 9/11 to help identify Osama should he be killed during the Afghanistan invasion.
Dunno about Faisel, but I’d suspect the same thing.
Isn’t DNA like a fingerprint, only better in that no two individual’s DNAs are identical? If that is true, then how would the DNA samples from family members help identify that the man killed was Osama and none other but him?
i believe the DNA of identical twins is identical. So in that sense, it is less discriminating than fingerprints, which won’t be identical for twins.
DNA is genetically inherited material. So parents pass on very similar DNA to their children, enough so that you can tell their children from others’ children. You can also tell more distant family relationships, though I don’t know the details well enough to say how specific the relationships can be defined.
I think that if you’re talking about what “the Pakistani government” wants as if everyone in the government wants the same thing, you don’t know that much about Pakistan.
Most people figured he was in Pakistan, and see above. Aside from which, “Pakis” is often considered offensive.
You can use mitochondrial DNA*, which is inherited only through the mother, or Y chromosome DNA**, which is inherited only through the father, to minimize the problem of genes being inherited from both parents and engaging in recombination to muck things up.
*Notably used to identify the remains of Czar Nicholas II and family
**Notably used to bolster the argument that that Thomas Jefferson fathered at least some of Sally Hemming’s kids, as at least one Hemmings descendant had DNA from Thomas Jefferson’s male line, which also eliminated his maternal cousins the Carrs, who had been the main alternative fathers, as contenders
Not “often”. It’s British Pakistanis, and only British Pakistanis, that consider it offensive. Can we stop trying to spread that to America, please? It can’t possibly do any good.
Pakistani Pakistanis don’t have a problem with the word?
