Emmylou Harris: Your Favorite Song?

I like almost all of her Bluegrass and Old Timey Gospel stuff. She’s the only female who can sing traditional Bluegrass without making it cringe worthy or without changing the music to fit her voice.

**Boulder to Birmingham ** is my favorite tune by her, but a close second is **Fools Thin Air ** and Easy From Now On

I just love the “mystery” of her!

By that I mean (and I hope y’all can understand this) I know I can find out anything she wants me to know as a fan , but there’s a part of me that doesn’t want to find out more.

It’s kinda like searching for a treasure all your life and then finding it, diving into all of those jewels and gold and raising up on your elbows, diamonds falling out of your ears and asking, “Now what?”

I believe that is what is known as an “anti-climax” (?), and at my age, I been having a lot of those lately! (That’s a joke! I am not really ED - I hope- y’all pray for me! )

No, my fantasy of Emmylou involves me waiting for her backstage after she sings my favorite tune, Save The Last Dance For Me, taking her home, brushing her hair, rubbing her back, and then just snugglin’ with her in the bed and talking in low voices until she falls asleep.

 (forgot how to do the spoiler thing)

But if she told me too much, I’d be afraid she might disappear.

Does that make sense?

Thanks

Y’know, I knew I knew the voice on My Sweet Carolina, but if I remember correctly she’s uncredited in the liner notes, and I’ve never really tried searching out who it was until this morning when the song came up on my playlist.

God I love that woman.

And I’ve now decided that my never-gonna-happen Perfect Album would be Emmylou releasing an album of her own, as produced and bandled by Ryan Adams (a la Van Lear Rose for Loretta Lynn and Jack White).

I think Emmylou has one of the most beautiful voices in popular music today. And I’ve held that opinion from the first time I heard her.

I like her collaborations with Patty Griffin. Aw, what the heck, I like anyone who collaborates with Patty Griffin. I like her work with Linda Ronstadt and Dolly Parton in Trio; there’s something about the combination of their voices that is just wonderful.

For her solo work:

Songbird from Spyboy. Just ethereal.

Shenandoah. Who doesn’t like that song?

Pancho and Lefty. Who doesn’t like Townes Van Zandt?

Red Dirt Girl. (Both the song and the CD.) Emmylou should write more songs if they come out this good.

I love that woman too, OMD . I love her so much that this canvas poster now hangs in my living room:

With framing, it cost me 110.00 dollars, but my living room never looked so good, so I figure it was well spent.

I have dibs on grovelling at her feet, Dude!

From “Treasures Left Behind Remembering Kate Wolf”, a great tribute album to the late California folker, Emmylou did a cover of the song “Love Still Remains”.

I walked down past the buildings, standing empty and unused.
Where you asked me one more time if I’d stay
And then you cried when I refused.

Sniff.

I’d like to mention Hello Stranger, but I love everything else mentioned here also.

The first one for me that comes to mind is Before Believing. It’s haunting to me.

*Winter
Summer season is taken over
It’s quiet
Like new fallen snow
I told you summer stories
But outside it’s getting mighty cold
I told you everything I could about me
Told you everything I could

How would you feel if the world was falling apart around you
And pieces of the sky were falling in your neighbors yard
But not on you
Wouldn’t you feel just a little bit funny
Thinking maybe there’s something you oughta do *

Has anyone ever heard that very, very first album she made? I think it was called “Gliding Bird” or something. I’ve never been able to track it down. One day.

One of the most beautifully recorded pieces to come out of Nashville is Here, There and Everywhere. It was perfect for her voice and flawlessly engineered.

I don’t know Emmylou, but I do live in Nashville. Thought you might like to know that she lives in a simple and friendly neighborhood instead of a fancy, upscale place. It is the kind of house that you would like to imagine her living in – clean, pretty, and fresh. It’s in an old neighborhood that’s very peaceful.

I’m gonna throw out “Ain’t livin’ long like this” off Spy Boy. Just cause no one else did yet. Yeah, I know she didn’t write it, but she sure sang the hell out of it.
