I never really hung on on the chat rooms, and I’ve picked up a lot of these through exposure. I like the ^^ (happy), @@ (confused or overwhelmed), ^^; (nervous, self-conscious), >< (frustrated), & T_T (crying) types, which mostly seem to be common among anime enthusiasts.
I always thought it meant “Ass Hat”. <=the hat and 3=ass (turned sideways)
I’ve always seen a more anime/manga influence on that particular one. It’s almost exactly like a common expression used to denote mischievousness, which is pretty much the same as “ooh, I’m evil.” (Bad example, but for the life of me I can’t find better.)
That was always my impression, too. It means asshat.
