Employee of the Month question

I saw this film today on a flight from Perth to Sydney.

I don’t know much about the sort of mammoth American warehouse store depicted in the film, so I don’t know how much of what was depicted was actually real or simply a parody.Do such stores really have awards for the fastest checkout operator in the region/state? Would an individual like the one in the film (Vince) actually draw admiring crowds of shoppers?

I know it’s a weird land, but surely this is a parody. Was the movie a comedy?

Oh yes, I’m fairly sure that it’s a parody. But you never know…

A mild comedy, yes. Not earth shatteringly funny.

I haven’t seen the movie, but in my limited shopping experience, the answer to your question is no.

And from what I have personally witnessed (not in retail, but at work nonetheless), Employee of the Month or its equivalent always seemed to come down to:* Whose turn is it to win this time?* My point of view is admittedly skewed, so maybe in some venues, performance does matter. Still, I’d be more inclined to believe that He Who Had The Fewest Complaints Against Him would be the monthly winner.

Disclaimer - I’m a grouchy old woman, so taked the above with that in mind.

(Not seen the film).

My experience leads me to believe that an Employee of the Month Award for fastest checkout operator in the store is common. Fastest checkout operator in the state? Less common, but not impossible. Rewards being more likely to go to the person who got the highest number people to sign up for store credit cards, or other loyalty card type things, all too likely.

Admiring crowds of shoppers for the Employee of the Month? Unlikely to the point of absurdity.

I’m relieved to hear that.
