"End of the World" for Skeeter Davis

Gee, I guess the SDMB doesn’t have many ‘Skeeter’ Davis fans.
She passed away a few days ago. Here’s her obituary:

Sorry for the crude title of this posting but it was her biggest hit and (unfortunately for her) it now has come true.

Gonna miss ya “Skeeter”.

Until I read that link, I never knew she had any other songs. Still sad though. “It’s The End of The World” is one of my favorite all time songs. I was real excited when a friend of mine made me a CD of what we called “Muh Man Done Left Me” songs and included it. RIP Skeeter. You did one of the great “Muh Man Done Left Me” songs of all time.

For a while I thought the thread wasn’t going to get any replies.
It’s good to know someone else remembers ‘Skeeter’.

The obit I read in the *NY Times * didn’t mention any survivors. Wasn’t she married to one of the guys from NRBQ?

Here’s an obit that mentions she was married 3 times.

the third time to NRBQ bassist Joey Spampinato.

I wonder how many movies used her “End of the world” song? Quite a few, I am sure.

On the IMDB I found 4 movies that contained a Skeeter Davis song. The movie titled “Affliction” does not feature “End of the World” but the other 3 do.

The IMDB (as good as it is) can sometimes have ‘sketchy’ information. As a general rule, the more recent the movie, the more plentiful is their data. Since, the movies listed are relatively recent, there are no doubt older movies which feature the song as well.

Ah, I should have known to look there. I think some movies have songs that are heard in the background, but don’t have an official soundtrack.

Man, if that song isn’t the national anthem for depression, I don’t know what is.

That song, while sad, still has a beautiful melody.

Here’s a song that’s really depressing - “Still I’m Sad” by the Yardbirds

The accompanying melody is sung like a Gregorian Chant.

I saw her perform live at the Grand Ol’ Opry in Nashville several years ago. She was really worth seeing. I was never a big fan of hers before that, but after I saw her do her thing I paid more attention to her music.

RIP, Skeeter.
