English Football - Coca-Cola Leagues - Seasonal Climax

Dale drew with Shrewsbury away 1-1.

The Shrews are also pushing for auto promo and Dale are still in the race.

I see the Swans are having a bit of luck these days

Foxes scored a VERY big win at home against Leeds today. Injury time goal steals the points. Sad it had to come against Leeds; I would love for the Leeds fans to get back to where they belong, since it wasn’t their fault their club got trashed down two flights.

I have kind of a soft spot for Leeds and would also like to see them back in the Premier League.

On another note, please raise a glass for Luton, whose draw today clinches their relegation into non-League football.

I’ve got no idea what you mean, our luck comes from us being the most skilful team in the championship.

It’s said - exclusively by Swans fans I admit – that Arsenal are the Swansea of the first division.

They have just the man to take them there. Simon Grayson performed miracles at Blackpool, and I wish him all the best. If the club doesn’t make it to the second division this season they’ll do it next year.

I’ll drink to that.

Likewise; see my prediction in the other thread (that I made at the start of this season), which included relegation concerns (although I did say I thought they would recover in the latter half of the season. Our form as actually been somewhat the opposite, with a good start and a poor finish - another two points dropped yesterday to another stupid late error. It’s really frustrating, but we’d be slaughtered in the top flight anyway as I’ve said before.

Sad for Luton, I’d like to say they’ll bounce back quickly but with so many decent teams in the conference it’s by no means a given. The only thing that helps them is that they have already had the necessary financial restructuring and player exodus that inevitably accompanies loss of league status (at least I assume they have).

A team whose progress I have been following with interest is Bournemouth, because a friend of mine is a big fan. At the moment it looks like they may just avoid joining Luton after some good results early this year, though most results last weekend went against them. They have had a 17 point deduction, without which they would be comfortably mid-table. I reckon one more win for them should secure safety.

Anyone got the latest news on Southampton?

Saints fan here, what kind of news are you after?

Lowe has killed the club I have supported for 28 years so I do find it hard to talk about it but I’ll try.

I’d be surprised if Dead Cat wasn’t referring to Southampton Leisure Holdings going into administration and the possibility, albeit slim, that a 10 point penalty would be applied to the football club because of this.

Good luck in your next three games and I hope you stay up*. I became interested in the Saints when Brett Ormerod moved there in late 2001. I used to check out the old saintsforever website, now defunct I think, and I know opinions on his effectiveness were polarised among supporters.

*As long as it’s not at the expense of another team closer to my heart.

The League has called in forensic auditors to go over the books before they make a decision and there is no date set as far as I know, that depends on the books I expect.

The fans are more interested in if anyone is going to buy us in the summer (anyone from Indian billionaires to fans groups being mooted) and secondly if the council going to buy St Mary’s. I can’t see us staying up to be honest whether we get deducted points or not. This is no ‘Great Escape’ we lack a certain MLT…

Ah Brett’s goal in the FA Cup semi final at Villa Park is one of my fondest Saints memories.

Further down the pyramid, I’m keeping an eye on AFC Wimbledon.

Formed only in 2002, the club is currently top of the Conference South with an obvious chance of promotion to the Conference National. I’m looking forward to AFC getting in to the league proper and playng a local derby at Milton Keynes.

Yes, I spotted them recently while idly flicking through the lower league tables on Teletext (as you do :)) - good on them!

Given that the football authorities generally take the opposite view to the current Formula One administration, and go out of their way to let results on the field of play stand where possible, I think it’s unlikley Southampton FC will be deducted points this season if this would affect their relegation situation. The worry is that the club will fold altogether if no buyer is found. How much of the current speculation is based on fact is always difficult to say, but I would be surprised if no-one comes forward. Of course the current situation is a little different from a couple of years ago, when investors were prepared to take on some debt…

Most of the debt is tied up in the St Mary’s mortgage and there is a feeling that the bank would be willing to settle for much less than it is worth top get it off the books which is a reasonable assumption. If the council buys the stadium at a bargain price the club becomes an attractive prospect I would think, a club in an area with few rivals for size and a recent record of regular sell outs when in the Premier League.

The fact we look likely to avoid a points penalty leaves a bad taste in my mouth and unless they change the rules what stops all the other clubs from creating holding companies and avoiding the penalty?

Your position might well improve into 6th the way things are panning out.

And so, Wolves are up whereas Charlton go down. The situation gets grimmer by the game for Southampton, sad to say. It’s squeaky bum time down at the bottom for Norwich as well. Who goes and who stays? It looks like going to the wire again.

And Foxes are guaranteed not only of promotion, but have won the season! Well done. Now, for the drive back to the Premiership!!!

Rochdale blew it losing 2-0 at home to Darlington.

So it looks like the play-offs for the 2nd year running

Well, that’s not so bad. If they win the playoffs, they go up, AND they get a visit to Wembley in the process, don’t they?

they won the play-offs last season, lost to Stockport 3-2 in final

Oh, sorry, over here in America, that would mean that they didn’t win the playoffs.

Yes well you merrikans allus did like to complicate matters didn’t you;)

I’m worried about Rochdale.

For so long it looked like automatic promotion for them but now the playoffs beckon once more. Mind you, if your team can negotiate these games and win at Wembley there is simply no better way to go up. I speak from personal experience having attended the Millennium Stadium in 2001 and Wembley in 2007. Fabulous days out, both of them.

Every set of supporters deserves some success every now and again, and I hope 35 years of basement-dwelling can be brought to a close for Rochdale this season.

Good luck to them.
