Re Deliah: Deliah Smith is a TV cook and British institution. She fronts programmes called things like “HOW TO COOK” and will show you how to boil an egg etc. She is very “mumsy” and respectable. Here’s her website
She is also phenomenonally popular - if a British house only has one cook book in it it will be one of Deliah’s. So she’s minted. She’s spent some of her dosh on Norwich City FC - she’s the largest shareholder and Chairwoman.
Now this respectable middle class, middle aged lady, got herself all pissed on booze and decvided to berate the home crowd for a lack of support. It was like seeing the Queen in a fight!
The closest American equivelent I can think of is Martha Stewart - but even Deliah has managed to avoid jail!
Just to mention that there’s an article in today’s Boston Herald saying that Robert Kraft, who owns the NFL champion New England Patriots, is looking into a controlling interest in Liverpool.
I would be interested to hear the views of our Doper friends “across the pond” regarding this development (along with the attempted bid by Malcolm Glazer to take over control of Man U.) From what I understand regarding Glazer/Man U., the fans (as well as some players and Sir Alex) are none too happy about it.
Heh heh. The ‘Squealia’ clip has been clogging inboxes around here for a couple of days Bless her, she admitted to having had ‘a couple of glasses of wine’. Yep, that’s right, dear.
Still, it might still provide a change from the North Stand’s usual “stick your saucepans up …”
Man Utd fans are not happy about Glazer as they think it’s a leveraged buy out (although they wouldn’t use this term) and also that he has the reputation of raising prices and stripping assets to take money out of the club.
The rest of us are laughing our socks off.
Football really doesn’t work as a business. The only people who should be involved in a club are people who want to be there - ie a rich man’s toy. Once you start to get a return on investment you’re stuffed.
In more important news Rinus Michaels has died - he’s the fellah that invented total football with the 70’s dutch team.
He owns the NFL franchise where I live. He’s probably raised ticket prices, although it’s impossible to get tickets still, so it’s not something I’m certain of. But he hasn’t stripped away assets. He’s been willing to spend to put a winning team on the field, even if I don’t always agree with his judgement. One difference, though, is our “salary cap” so now we are paying for our early spending. It’s complicated but the effect of spending a lot of money before is that you can’t spend money now, whether or not you actually have it.
Net, he’s an odd little fellow, and not exactly beloved, but not hated, either.
Charlton Athletic have apparently become the first EPL team to open an academy in the USA to groom future players. They’re going to set up camp in Phoenix, Arizona. Ajax already have a camp in Florida, although I have no idea where.
the simple answer is - you can’t. This is the closest - they have some goals:
The goals etc are all copyright and as such heavily protected. Individual official club sites have them too.
At least that’s the authorised version. However there ARE sites out there - a little googling will show you the way. I’d put a link but this board is a bit up-itself about stuff like that.
How is Delia pronounced? I would have thought Dee-lie-a, but I could swear they pronounced her name differently on Fox Footbal Friday.
As for goals, if you look in individual threads in BigSoccer they often stream goal clips, or will have links to streaming video of less easy to find games.
Some interesting results today - Man utd getting a draw effectively ends the outside chance they had of challenging Chelsea unless Chelsea implode - which doesn’t seem very likely. (ALthough as I am writing this it’s CFC 1 Deliah’s Boys 1)
Liverpool’s loss also means that they aren’t likely to catch Everton. Also THFC’s loss to our other bogey team hasn’t helped us in our chase for Europe.
I am quite looking forward to seeing Wigan in the Premiership. I’ve never been to Wigan, and I think I’ll make the trip if they come up.
Yesterday Liverpool, Middlesborough, Charlton and Spurs basically said “Hey Davie Moyes! You’ve had a great season, why don’t you take fourth place? Go on, its yours, we’re not bothered, we’ll all contest the UEFA places” So what do we do? We fuck things up against Blackburn Rovers AT HOME!
A win today would have locked Everton into the CL next season. There just seems to be a massive difference between being eleven points clear of Liverpool and being eight points clear. It would have broken their resolve. Now it will probably go down to the wire.
Of course I’m biased, but I think on the day the slightly better team won. It made me feel a whole lot better about our safety too.
What’s Everton’s run-in like? 8 points still seems like a healthy margin unless you have a whole load of tough games still to come, especially seeing as Liverpool are the proverbial big bunch of arse at the moment.
I think one of the main reasons ManU fans hate the proposed deal is because the huge debt that will result from the sale. That is why fears of ticket raising and selling off players are so rampant. It’ll turn ManU from a team with no debt to a team with HIGH debt. If Kraft’s group can make an offer without putting the team into debt, I’m not sure there will be that much protest over it.
Fergie wanted big Van the Man to get a full 90 minutes - as did Iain Dowie! They’ll have to rename “first touch”, first hoof for Ruud.
Still, I fancy there coulkd be an upset on the cards in Milan, so long as Shrek plays 90 minutes and Fergie tapes his mouth shut before kick-off and again after he’s had his oats at half time.
One intriguing possibility is that if Liverpool win (or possibly steal) the Champs League then they will relegate Everton to the UEFA cup despite being below them in the league.
So if the Champion’s League is won by a club, they automatically get a place for the following years competition, displacing the bottom placed qualifier from the Premiership. Does the same apply to the UEFA Cup if Middlesbrough managed to win it?
