Enhanced CDs

So, today i bought “White Pony” by the Deftones today. Thinking it was just another CD, i popped it into my CD-ROM drive. What happened surprised me. There was a whole flash type presentation on it. Complete with pictures, a short video clip, lyrics, and even a pac man like game. I have never seen something like this on a CD before. Are there any other CDs out there like that?

Offspring: Americana has something like that. I thought my computer was going wonky. (There’s a "Pretty Fly (for a White Guy) Karaoke bar.

Other “Enhanced” CDs…WWF the Music volume 5 tried to install “The Rock’s Customer Internet Browser”. (IE5.5 with a WWF logo.)

A couple of Sarah MacLachlan’s are like that, as is Velvet Chain’s Live at Temple Bar. Also, Fiona Apple’s Tidal. I’m sure I’ve got a couple others too, but those are the only ones that I came up with off the top of my head.

My Third Eye Blind CD singles and my BNL Shoebox EP are enhanced CDs. So is my Cirque du Soleil ‘Quidam’ soundtrack.

Just look for CDs with either the QuickTime or Made With Macromedia logos on the back, or some blurb about system requirements.

The Quidam soundtrack is enhanced? With what?

And the newest Matchbox 20 CD is enhanced, though I forget with what. So is the soundtrack for Pokemon: The First Movie [sub]don’t ask.[/sub]

There Is Nothing Left To Lose by Foo Fighters is like that. Pics, sound, lyrics, links, etc.

I would definatly say the majority of CDs are Enhanced anymore. Or at least they are for the type of music I listen to (Rock, Alternative, etc.). I think that a lot of bands at last see it as a new medium to connect with fans. Also, they were proabably counting on a few people like yourself, Doobieous, just putting the CD in their CD-ROM, and their program pops up.

The “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” soundtrack is enhanced, and like Doob I found out by putting it in my computer drive on a whim. Still, it’s never occurred to put any of my other CDs in to see, probably since I’ve hardly bought anything new or noteworthy the last few years.

It’s mostly still images from the show, but one section has a video clip. Pretty neat.

I Mother Earth’s Scenery and Fish was my first experience with the enhanced CD phenomenon. Others that I’ve come across are Korn’s Life is Peachy (apparently there are two versions of the CD, one enhanced and one with a hidden bonus track) most of Sarah McLaughlin’s catalog, and my personal fave, an Underworld single with the video for “King of Snake”.

Incidentally, the very first enhanced CD, IIRC, was an album by Helix, sometime in the early '90s. It had a video on it. Yes, it’s true, hair bands are the early adopters in the music world
