The woman is clearly quite mentally ill. My mother was a clinical therapist and when I was in high school she would drag me to the local mental health center’s community activites for the mentally ill to hang out with delusional/schizophrenic types. I also went on outings with them and provided Christmas musical entertainment at the state hospital for the mentally ill. The woman in the video is behaving exactly like what I witnessed on numerous occasions from people whose brains were out of order.

Anyway, she deserves compassion, not ridicule. I understand the reaction of people to her in the restaurant, because after all, what can you do - she needs to be subdued and removed, not catered to. But that youtube video is just plain cruel. Our understanding of mental disorders is still in the dark ages, but chances are the brain chemistry of that woman is all fucked up and it is no more her own fault than if she had cancer.

Laughing at her symptoms is unenlightened. You might as well point and laugh at someone with CP or Alzheimer’s. (And yes, I know I sound like a scold. Sorry.)

I tend to agree, if for no other cause than: sane, reasonable people don’t behave like that.
I think I’ve experienced something like this before with a FOAF who behaved quite normally until some trigger event occurred, and from that point, there was literally no going back - absolutely anything anyone tried to do or say after the trigger point just added fuel to the fire - no matter how placatory anyone tried to be - once it started, it could only escalate and the only resolution was to get away.

I get what you’re saying but there is also an element of willful behavior in many such temperaments.

Knowing it was unacceptable and would have dire consequences for her was probably the only thing keeping her from going over the counter and grabbing a cleaver.

Often a person like that refuses to get help or acknowledge that they even have any problem. In some cases the mania they feel when they’re cycling high is so pleasurable to them that they shun any medication that balances their brain chemistry.

It’s hard to judge from a single video of a single episode but I would guess she’s had problems all her life with parents, siblings, teachers and classmates, bosses and coworkers, etc. Her parents had a chance to force her to get help but didn’t or weren’t able to. Society’s negative reactions to her behavior may be the only thing left that could influence her to get help.

I worked retail in the 80s and early 90s. This is not unbelievable at all.

Anyone who has worked in retail or service jobs for any significant period can relate similar stories. But then, the poster in question has exhibied baseles skepticism of various other events including the Chinese space program, so he is not perhaps the best arbiter of what is and is not plausbile.
