I regularly watch The Fairly Oddparents, The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, Spongebob Squarepants and Jimmy Neutron.
I listen to Disturbed, Tool, Dream Theater…lots of progressive and heavy rock. I also love 80’s music. I probably am the target audience for that though.
I have all the Asterix comic books, both in English and in French. I just love them. I think they can be hysterically funny, and they also taught me quite a lot about ancient European history (even riddled with anachronisms as they are).
I love the Harold and Kumar movies. I’m sure they’re aimed at the dumb stoner fratboy crowd, but they crack me the hell up. I was happy to see both the actors appear on House at different times.
I’m on the downside of middle age, female - I used to watch Pokeman cartoons when my daughter was little. (I’m ashamed to admit it, but I had a painfully embarrassing crush on James.) I’m unusual in that I don’t care much about Housewives of Bayonne, those shows where they try to dress you up, Lifetime for Women, chick flicks, or Sex and the City. I’ll watch them with someone if I have to and make the appropriate noises, but I’d much rather watch Dirty Jobs or Mythbusters. Or science fiction, or old monster movies.
I doubt, nay, hope that I will never grow out of loving cartoons. From South Park, Adult Swim, and the Fox Sunday line up to Flapjack, Chowder, and (if I’m up early enough)whatever happens to be on Saturday morning; from Disney to Miyazaki; and all the classics from my youth that I’ll still watch if I have a chance.
Being 26, I don’t think I’m supposed to swoon and get all happy over 40s Screwball Comedies, yet I love them! Cary Grant is the perfect man.
My whole life, I’ve had the sense that since I’m a girl, I shouldn’t like football. Every time a woman bitches to me about how much she hates it when a man in her life watches football, I experience vaguely violent impulses.
I love a lot of the Disney comedies – Sonny with a Chance is one of the funniest shows on TV right now, I can’t miss an episode of Wizards of Waverly Place, and I once was seriously considering doing a tarot deck based on The Suite Life of Zach and Cody (and now its sequel, The Suite Life on Deck. A lot of the Disney Channel Original Movies have their charm as well-- Go Figure is still the best figure skating movie that has been made, and I’m counting the days until Princess Protection Program is aired.
And yes, I’m a 27-year-old male. (In my defense, Hannah Montana and a lot of other stuff on there is completely unwatchable).
I can understand the Marx Brothers, and maybe Paul Newman, but for the rest of the list, I thought that they were just targeting anybody who would watch or listen.
Huh, I loved dead like me. I never thought of it as a show aimed at middle aged women.
And come to think of it, even though I never watched it on a regular basis, I think I kept watched Sesame Street for a while after I outgrew the age-range it’s intended for.
The *Warriors *series (about cat colonies, aimed at tweens)
Various cartoons including Kim Possible, Doug, The Replacements, Rugrats, and American Dragon: Jake Long.
*The Harry Potter *series
*World of Warcraft *(I know people of all ages play, but I don’t think I’m their target demographic)
Industrial/synthpop/EBM music
Heavy metal (albeit the more melodic end of the genre)
My wife and I are over 50. That means that in terms of American commercial entertainment, there is nothing that we are the target audience for. Anything we enjoy is targeted at someone younger or wealthier.
24 years old, female, I love the oldies…Frankie Valli, Lou Christie, the Crystals, the Ronettes…all the stuff they used to play on oldies stations, before they all died.
Oh hell yes! Gotta check in with the gang at Sunset Towers on a regular basis. I can’t imagine how many times I’ve read that book.
And Pokemon. I recently started playing the card game with my son, and instantly became hooked. At least the “I play with my son” thing gives me a bit of an excuse, you know? But when I’ve floated the idea of learning to play with a few parents of Pokemon-playing kids, they’ve treated me like I have two heads. It’s a “kid” game, so no adult could possibly be interested, right?
There are a couple of dads that play at league. No moms. I’ve tried to be friendly to the non-playing moms, but apparently, they consider an adult woman who plays Pokemon to be so completely bizarre that they’ll barely talk to me! Or maybe they’re just scared that I’ll sic Torterra on their heinies.
(And in case you’re reading this, Cee, I’m totally not talking about you.)
Harry Potter for me, too. My wife and I started reading the books aloud to our oldest son when he was too young to read them for himself, and both got hooked.
I’ll second the votes for Jimmy Neutron and Fairly OddParents. The animated Buzz Lightyear of Star Command series, when it was on, was also very good. I watched 'em all “because the boys are watching them.” Lots of gags for both kids and adults, just like the old Warner Bros. cartoons at their best.
41 year old woman, just bought a 4x4 Jeep Cherokee (couldn’t find a good used F150 4x4)…and a Hello Kitty for the dash. (Might keep my husband from driving it). I read dystopian/post-apocalyptic fiction, listen to reggae, am very technologically savvy, like to know what is wrong with my cars, own more power tools than my husband, like guns and um…Goodfellas is my favorite movie.
