The target demographic of all CW shows is women 18-32, so you’re probably not too far off.
On the other hand, I regularly read YA fiction. One of my professors made us promise that we wouldn’t turn up our noses at a book because it’s “for kids” because you miss important things that way. He seems to be right.
I’m a 51 year old white female. I really don’t think that I like anything that I AM the target audience for, except possibly support garments and gourmet chocolate.
I love Sponge Bob Square Pants. I’m not entirely sure I’m really of an an age that is ten or eleven times their demographic. I just regret that most viewers will miss the best jokes.
When I was 14, I was a fan of professional wrestling. Not sure why I liked it so much, but I was the only girl I knew that had a Hulk Hogan poster in her room. I also used to enjoy Erma Bombeck’s books - they taught me a lot about American culture and made me realize I was not cut out to be a stay-at-home mom. Nothing wrong with it, just not for me.
Now that I am a late-30s mom, I should be watching Lifetime network, listening to Josh Groban and reading Ladies’ Home Journal. Or so the advertisers and focus groups think. Instead, I read manga and Harry Potter books, listen to dance music and rap, and watch shonen anime. I used to claim that I was the oldest fan of Naruto, but I have since found out there are older fans. Oh, well, look for me at the anime conventions in a few years. I’ll be the Tsunade cosplayer.
Too funny - the dummer in my first mid-life crisis band was Lou’s drummer and music director for 10 years.
40’s guy - also love the PPuff Girls, Dexter’s Lab and Fairly Oddparents. And I am currently addicted to the single That’s Not My Name by the Ting Tings…
I’m 45, and I love The Sarah Jane Adventures, which is targeted at kids/tweens and is not as “intense” as the other Doctor Who series (for the record, I also love the original Who and Torchwood).
I still read books from the kids’ section of the library.
Last year, when I was living in a place without a kitchen (and was on medication that had the side effect of increased appetite!) I couldn’t stop watching the food network. I’m sure that most people watching weren’t gourmets, but I bet they assumed most had kitchens.
Considering how shocked a friend was when I said my favourite band was the Pogues, I bet their fans are generally not mid-twenties fairly straight-laced women.
