North/East/West England?
Oxford?
Wait! You meant El Cid, no?
He’s a merican, too, that is, if his location references his actual nationality and not simply his current residence.
BTW, Ellis, you had me at “What the fuck.”
I agree completely. I’m not suggesting that they be moved to MPSIMS because they are overwhelming the other Cafe topics. Far from it; they’re a barely noticeable minority.
My position on the sports thread is best summed up by one of the “moved threads” quotes from DrMatrix in the thread [post=6944096]Help Me Remember this TV Show/Movie[/post]:
It is a factual question, but was moved to GQ because the subject matter has a forum specifically for the topic. If sports were given a forum for the same reason, I think the sports threads would do better. Not they they need their own forum; sports are so mundane and pointless as to be tailor-made for MPSIMS.
As for food? I care much less about it, but I am truly curious about my general fitness example. Granted, the SDMB isn’t exactly a bastion of fit people, but still, where do threads about diets go? What about exercise? And what about combination threads, which is really the idea behind fitness in general? For example:
Help me prepare a good exercise and diet regimen…
Where would such a thread belong? Again, I’m not invested in this particular topic, but it does seem a strange splintering of health and well being that exercise, weight-loss and dieting threads would belong in a different forum than recipes and food.
And many thanks, Dex.
Another point to consider is that when you open MPSIMS on default settings, it shows the first 50 of 67 threads, whereas Cafe Society shows the first 50 of 412.
Not that the forums have any particular need of even thread distribution, but it’s something to consider at least.
Exactly. They have their own versions of that show, like Pop Idol, the show from which American Idol was derived.
So am I the only Doper who thinks that this pitting and the resultant locking of threads is far sillier and more frivolous than the “Name 100” threads?
Incidentally, in the “Name 100 GWTW characters” thread that I started, it was actually a cool way for hardcore GWTW fans to discuss the book. What’s non Cafe Society about that? How often do you get to mention Rene Picard or Solange Robillard in a day to day conversation? Isn’t that the appeal of SDMB?
In the "fictional character/fictional soap opera thread, it was a spoof of soap opera cliches and was a fun little project. Again- what’s wrong with that? One Doper gets pissy about it, can’t find the scroll-down button and so they’re closed?
This mod squad increasingly sucks here. I will not be renewing my membership this year.
Dude, you are nowhere near as bent out of shape about this as you could be. You could be much, much angrier and more offended at this egregious and serious waste of your time.
Kiss me…
Okay okay, your right, it’s kind of excessive.
Can we do 50?
Not you. The other one.
Hay, at least I’m not following him around pissing and moaning about it in unrelated threads.
WTF…
I know you think you’re clever with the alliteration, but seriously dude: Don’t you think Italians discuss *Italian Idol * (Italian television makes all U.S. tv look like Masterpiece theatre)? And French tv invented the (in)famous game show Don’t forget your toothbrush. Do you seriously think Euro (or Moroccan) people spend their days discussing Sartre and commenting the latest trip to the art gallery?
No, you’re not the only one.
So Ellis Dee you got your wish. Why don’t you ask for this thread to be closed so the last trace of the 100 threads will drift off the front of the board.
Jim
Leave it to a Swede to lecture me about café culture. It is to laugh.
Wow. You watch a lot of TV.
In my experience, the bases of the conversations are music, art, history, philosophy and metaphysics. Never politics, never war and never crap television.
Good for you. You seem to lack joy in your life.
It’s quite possible to form an opinion without consuming a lot of [whatever]. I don’t need to eat a lot of Miracle Whip to know that I prefer mayo. And I don’t have to watch a lot of Italian tv to know what it’s like.
You’re kidding right? Right!?
If you’re not, let me suggest you read *La Distinction, Critique sociale du jugement * by Pierre Bourdieu. It should be right up your pretentious alley. And you might ac tually learn something about culture in the process.
Ah yes, a reference to a mouldering cultural study from the 1960s, as proffered by a windbag son of a French sharecropper. You don’t see the irony.
Listen, I’m never going to tell you what should qualify in your mind as “art” and I’m never going to tell you to shut up about it. And granted, I have access to friends and associates who desire to speak on more elevated topics. If I could express my ideal for Cafe Society, it would be somewhere between these two positions.
If you actually follow through you’ll be one of the less than 2% of the people who make that particular claim and actually do it. Yawn
I think you got wooshed. Or I did. I thought that was some of the driest sarcasm I’ve ever seen.
If I did, I tip my hat to the whoosher.
